One good thing about C.A.F.E. government regulations is that it has pushed GM & its engineers into reducing weight of various parts of their automobiles in order to comply with the set M.P.G. standards. Sure, a lot of us don't like seeing plastic or fiberglass fenders on our new cars, but that isn't the only place GM has reduced weight.
You may be dreaming back to the '70's when lightweight (sometimes better described as junk) head castings rolled off the assembly lines on our beloved small blocks and think lightweight parts equals poor quality, thus they will never live up to the task the "good old" parts used to do. But this isn't true for the lightweight gear reduction starters found on most GM cars and trucks.
The new gear reduction starters from GM shed about 10lbs. off the nose of the car and since they have a planetary gear reduction system (like an automatic transmission) they are able to multiply their toque to the flywheel more efficiently than the old lug-of-a-starter that is currently on your ride!
And these starters have a clear advantage over the mail order high torque mini-starters that, in my opinion, is very important & will allow you to enjoy your ride (less down time if parts failure does occur)...they all have servicable parts that you can easily pick up at the local corner parts store. A very big bonus in my book!
