  • '95-'98 Ford Windstar Dual Electric Fans

Pic #1 Back in 1996 I was sick and tired of having a noisy Flex Fan that cooled marginally (at best) my small block during the summer months. The search was on for a better alternative to a mechanical fan.

After seeing some of the prices for electric fans at various stores & parts houses, that option was about to be ruled out as well, but luck prevailed as my brother and I soon discovered that Ford Windstar dual electric fans would swap easily into my car with only minor trimming.

As you can see in the picture to the left, the setup has two electric fans. The one on the left (the driver's side fan) is a one speed fan and the electric fan on the right (passenger side) is a two speed fan. The fans, in my application, are sufficient enough that only the small one speed fan is necessary to cool my engine during most months of the year. Only during the hot & humid summer months will the larger fan kick on.

The '95-'98 setup is pictured, but there is a '99-'03 setup that looks similar

    Fan Shroud Trimming

Pic #1 Pic #2 Pic #3 There are two major areas to look out for when swapping on these fans to your radiator.

Be sure to check for clearance in these areas and trim the shroud where necessary.

    Wiring

Here is an example of how a lot of guys are wiring up their fans to run them.

But before we discuss how to wire them you must understand how each motor needs to be wired up to run them properly. There are two fans, a single speed and a two speed fan. The single speed fan (located on the driver's side) is easy as it only has a ground and a voltage-in tab. The two speed fan has two tabs for voltage-in and one tab for ground. In order to get the fan to operate on high speed you need to apply voltage to both voltage-in tabs. For low speed just apply voltage to one of the voltage in tabs.
