Richer living
for single Christians:
A Singles Survival Guide, by Diane Kingston
Keep in
touch?
- Dont be scared to hug your
friends, we all need contact. Before doing this it is
advisable to find out who would welcome this and who
really dont like hugs! Even if you see someone
receiving a hug from another, it doesnt mean that a
hug from anyone else would be acceptable.
- Think carefully when interpreting
someones behaviour. Is what you consider to be
flirtation their own brand of playfulness? Perhaps you
could compare the way they behave towards you with their
behaviour towards someone else.
- Are you guilty of unhelpful or
misleading flirting? Or are you over-cautious?
Prayerfully look at your own behaviour with people of the
opposite sex and modify it as you feel appropriate.
- We must be sensitive to how the way we
dress affects people of the opposite sex. Jesus said
"anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already
committed adultery with her in his own heart"
(Matthew 5 verse 28). I believe that the principle found
in 1 Corinthians 8 verse 13 can be applied to this by
both men and women: "If what I eat causes my brother
to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I
will not cause him to fall." Consider how you might
need to change the way you dress to avoid causing a
problem to your brothers or sisters.
- Remember that for single Christians
sex is not an option until we are married. For more help
in this area have a look at one of the more in-depth
books listed at the end of this book.
- Be very careful of inappropriate
relationships. Whether we are single or attached we
sometimes crave personal attention which can quite easily
develop into something more than we intended. This can
ruin good friendships and hurt you. I can recommend
"The Snare" (see the resources section of this guide) for guidance and
suggestions of how to both avoid and get out of such
relationships.
