Graduation Requirements

In order to graduate from high school in Indiana, you must earn a minimum of 38 credits. The CORE 40 goes beyond this state minimum. In addition, your high school may have additional requirements for high school graduation.

A. Take 28 to 30 credits from the list below. One credit equals one semester or one-half of a school year, except for Physical Education.

Language Arts
8 credits in Literature, Composition, and Speech

Mathematics
6-8 credits in Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus

Science
6 credits in Laboratory Science from the following:
2 Biology;
2 Chemistry or Physics; and
2 additional credits from Chemistry, Physics, Earth/Space Science, Advanced Biology, Advanced Chemistry, or Advanced Physics

Social Studies
6 credits distributed as follows:
2 U.S. History
1U.S. Government
1Economics
1World History and/or Geography
1additional course from above or other Social Studies area

Physical Education
1credit (one semester)

Health/ Safety
1credit (one semester)

B. Choose 8 additional credits in courses from the list above or below:

Foreign Languages
French, German, Japanese, or Spanish

Arts
Take 1 or more years of Art, Vocal/Instrumental Music, or Drama

Career Area
At least 6 credits in a logical sequence from a technical area

C. Choose 2 to 4 more credits from any courses at your school.
