The completion of the Donald E. Gavit Junior-Senior High School brings to Hammond a new high school to help meet the needs of a rapidly growing high school population.

The honor of having a school building named after an individual comes to relatively few, and especially is an exception that a school building is named for a person during his lifetime.

The fact that such an honor has been accorded to Donald E. Gavit by action of the Board of School Trustees, elected by and representing the voters of the City of Hammond, indicates recognition of "long, outstanding, conscientious and dedicated service to the schools as teacher and Business Manager."
