Our
Band Went "Hawaiian"
The Gavit
MS/HS Band recently took a trip of a lifetime.
They performed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii at the USS Missouri Battleship. The planning involved two years of fundraising
to lower the cost of this eight-day trip.
Gavit
Band Booster President, Cindy Archie, said, “The cooperation of the Gavit
Band Parents and their dedication made this trip possible.
We are so proud of our band and the opportunity to travel to Hawaii
to represent Hammond, Indiana!”
Thirty
five band members, grades 7-12, twenty two chaperones, and sixteen guests
traveled on April 16 to Hawaii and returned on April 24.
The TWA flight was nine hours long, which was the longest that
anyone has flown. They stayed at the Waikiki Village Outrigger
Hotel in Waikiki Beach, Oahu. In
addition to the performance, they:
·
toured the USS Arizona Memorial, USS Bowfin submarine and
the USS Missouri battleship
·
laid a wreath at the memorial over the sunken ship that
entombs 1000 servicemen who died on December 7, 1941
·
spent plenty of time on the world-famous Waikiki Beach
·
visited the Polynesian Cultural Center to learn “hands
on” about the seven cultures of the area’s islands
·
snorkeled at Hanauma Bay
·
spent a day at Secret Island’s private beach
·
hulaed
·
surf, boogie board
·
ate Hawaiian foods and learned Hawaiian language
·
went native at Germaine’s Luau
·
hiked to the top of Diamond Head Crater
Mr.
Trimmel, Gavit’s Band Director said, “ We traveled during Spring Break
so we only missed two days of school. We take a major trip every two years and we’re
excited about returning from Hawaii.
After our 1997 trip to Hawaii, I didn’t know if we would ever return.
Thanks to the Gavit community and their support we were able to take the
trip of a lifetime twice! It’s
a dream come true!”
