Frequently Asked Questions

Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

Hypertension is a dangerous condition where the blood pressure is persistently higher than normal. If left untreated, people with hypertension are at risk for heart attack, stroke or kidney failure.

Human heart beats about 100,000 times a day. Each time the heart beats, blood is pumped through the various blood vessels in the body. The blood pressure is defined as the pressure the blood exerts on the vessel walls. If the pressure is too low, the blood may not reach certain areas of the body. If the blood pressure is too high, the heart and blood vessel walls may be damaged.

Do you have Hypertension ?

Millions of people know that they have high blood pressure. Millions of other people don't know that they have high blood pressure. Furthermore, millions more are at risk for high blood pressure. Since a person can have hypertension without ever displaying any symptoms, the only way to determine whether you have high blood pressure or not is consistent monitoring of your blood pressure.
Hypertension may be suspected when the blood pressure is high. It is confirmed through blood pressure measurements that are repeated over time. Blood pressure consistently elevated over 140 systolic (which indicates the pressure generated when the heart beats) or 90 diastolic (which indicates the pressure when the heart is at rest). The person may show signs of complications.

Symptoms
  • headache (occasionally)
If hypertension is severe, may have:
  • tiredness
  • confusion
  • vision changes
  • nausea, vomiting
  • excessive perspiration
  • muscle tremors
  • angina-like pain: crushing substantial chest pain
  • heart failure
  • blood in urine

Note: Often no symptoms are present.

Causes

In the vast majority of cases no direct cause of hypertension is known. Certain factors are known to increase your risk of developing the disease. These include a sedentary lifestyle, drinking alcohol, and smoking.

Living with hypertension

Hypertension treatments, including various hypertension medications, can help patients prevent heart problems. If left untreated, medical complications such as heart disease can result. Living with hypertension doesn't have to be difficult. By making small, gradual changes to your lifestyle, you will be able to control your blood pressure.

The Alternative Medicine

Many people are beginning to look to alternative medicine for ways to control their blood pressure. Dietary supplements and eastern medicine are quickly gaining in popularity as people look for simple, inexpensive methods to solve their health problems. Alternative medicine usually has added health benefits and usually lacks the side effects that often come with medications.
