What is Ayurveda

Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine from India and the oldest healing complete medical system in the world. Ayurveda is the original science of health, which is Sanskrit for “science of life”, originated in India more than 10,000 years ago and is believed to be the oldest healing science in existence, from which all other systems emerged. Pronounced "Aa-your-vay-da", this ancient healing system has three main focuses:

  • Healing illness

  • Prevention of disease

  • Longevity or age reversal

Its aim is to provide guidance regarding food and lifestyle so that healthy people can stay healthy and folks with health challenges can improve their health by organizing the fundamentals of life into proper systems.

The WHO recognition

The World Health Organization estimates that Ayurvedic Medicine treats almost one third of the world’s population. It is practiced in Hindu, Christian, Muslim and Buddhist countries throughout the world. It has been recognized as a valid system of medicine by the WHO since 1982.

The Science of Life

Ayurveda is about as much about prevention and healthy living as it is for curing ailments. Being the  “science of life”  Ayurveda is more than just a medical system. It is a system that includes all domains of life and one that treats the individual rather than the disease. Ayurvedic medicine is a system based more on function than on structure. It strives to bring the systems of the body into equilibrium so that the body, or metabolism, functions as a unit according to the needs of its environment.

There are thousands of medical texts available on Ayurveda written in Sanskrit and a some of them are also available in English or other languages. Ayurveda is a simple system of health care that is based on the observation of nature. It is easy to use and apply in the daily life. Through centuries of experience and observation, the practitioners of Ayurveda have updated and refined their methods to ease the physical, emotional and environmental stresses present in today's busy lifestyles.

 The Mother of all healing

It is one of the most important health systems in India and it has attracted increasing attention form the West. Many scholars presume that knowledge of Ayurveda spread out from India and influenced the ancient Chinese system of medicine, Unani medicine, and the humoral medicine practiced by Hippocrates in Greece. While it is commonly accepted that Western medicine had it roots in Greek thought and practice, it has been shown that Greek medicine relied heavily on knowledge from the East and India.

There are those who suggest that Hippocrates, considered to be the father of Western medicine, based his medical knowledge on Ayurveda.  This style became popular in Europe, and established the foundation of the European tradition in medicine. In 16th Century Europe, Paracelsus, the originator of modern medicine, practiced and propagated a system of Medicine, which borrowed heavily from Ayurveda. For this reason, Ayurveda is often referred to as the "Mother of all healing."
