James R. Miller of McLeansboro passed through E'town last week enroute to Rock Creek to see his sister, Mrs. Asa Reynolds. He came to E'town last week and stayed all night with E.L. Robinson and accompanied him to Rosiclare the next day and saw his sister-in-law Mrs Jane Miller & children, with whom he spent the day, returning here in the evening. Name of Deceased: W. E. Stokes
Name of Newspaper: Hardin County Independent
Date of Newspaper: December 1897
Obituary: W. E. Stokes passed peacefully and quietly away Sunday at about noon. As the reader of the Independent are already informed, his taking of was that dreaded disease consumption. His remains the mortal man were interred Monday in the cemetery at Thomas Angleton's in the presence of a large concourse of relatives and friends. His interment was solimized with the honors and ceremonies of the IOOF which were gold and impressive. "We mourn the loss of a good man." Noah Webster. Brother Stokes was such a "good man" in the full extent of the phrase. He left many evidences that he was anxiously awaiting a blissful awakening in eternity. We sympathize with the bereaved widow and family as one who has been made to feel the sting of such bereavment and the aid we would most heartily and concernly extend them, to prayerfully seek to meet him in his blissful abode at the right hand of God in Heaven. There all tears are unknown; and there is no parting there.

PATTON sarah a. [Parents] was born 24 Jan 1862 in hardin co., IL. She died 22 Jun 1935. She was buried in angleton-patton, hardin co., IL. She married STOKES william e. 23 Jan 1882.

SARAH A. CARR Sarah A. Carr, sixth child of Samuel and Hannah Patton was born January 24th. 1862 and departed this life June 22nd. 1935. Aunt Sarah, as she was known to all, spent her entire life in and around Yellow springs vicinity. She raised her family there and had said so many times in her life, that there was no place like the Little Hills of Hardin County to her. Aunt Sarah was better known by her many friends, who knew her, for to know her was to love her. She was a mother to all who came into her home and especially to the writer, who spent the better part of six years straight, in her home. We always found her with a smile and a word of comfort. I visited her not so long before she departed this life and her conversation was that she was having to lay down this life to take up a new one and how the Lord had wonderfully blessed her in life being the weakest of all the family and yet out lived them all and she really thanked the Lord for it. She had one child, a daughter that preceded her in death and only two left to mourn her loss. Mrs Lottie Richardson and Lessie Hodge, the former she made her home with. She will be greatly missed by her immediate family as also by the neighbors and friends. And so to the friends and relatives I shall say, weep not as one that has no hope, for beyond the veil of tears we shall meet again if we trust in Aunt Sarah's God and this we must do. Rev. M.F.
