Deseret Homeschool
About Deseret Homeschool

Deseret Homeschool (DHS) was started in 1994 as a resource and support system for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints who homeschool their children in the Cobb County and Cherokee County area (in Northwest Suburban Atlanta).  It is, however, open to any homeschoolers who want to be included in a wholesome, encouraging environment.

Philosophy:  Each family is encouraged to actively participate in making exciting things happen in the group.  If there is an activity you would like, use this as a forum to develop and accomplish that goal.  In the past, this attitude has allowed us to enjoy a children's choir, an American Girls' Club, a Scout Club, A Girl's Keepers of the Hearth Club,  and other classes and fieldtrips.

To help parent-teachers find their way in the beginning months of homeschooling, we hold an annual "Getting Started in Homeschooling" seminar that has helped dozens of families launch their homeschooling adventures.

Because we are so busy, all business is now conducted by email and the website.  So, it's important to check each at least once a week.  Hopefully, as the year goes by, we will post articles from past print-copy newsletters.

Fieldtrips:  While we try to make families aware of great educational opportunities in the community, we usually only book fieldtrips for which a group is needed to either attend or get a special discount at the facility.  Check the Activities and Events page often (weekly would be a good idea!) since we plan to stay busy this year!  One of the highlights of the year is the Nutcracker Ballet and Festival of Trees.   When the weather gets really cold, things heat up at Fort Discovery where admission for educational groups is free!  We head east to the science museum in February or March.   If you have an activity you want to help happen, please speak up!

Group Activities:  We will try to hold Park Days twice a month this year.  A special touch to our Park Day is the monthly birthday celebration.  If your` child has a birthday during the month, bring 2 dozen cupcakes and be sure he or she stands up to be sung to.  At Co-op Days, when the weather is too cold for a long Park Day, we hope to also give the children an opportunity to share talents they are developing.  The International Food Festival in November is a great time to learn about new countries and try new foods.
