| The Danish Flag
The Danish flag is commonly known as the Dannebrog, which means "Danish cloth" or "spirit of Denmark". The cross design on the Dannebrog, noted for its similarity to the cross of Saint Philip the Apostle, was subsequently adopted by other Nordic countries including Sweden, Finland, Norway and Iceland. According to ancient tradition, the flag is thought to represent a heavenly vision seen by King Waldemar II the day before the Battle of Lyndanisse in 1219. However, some historians believe it was simply derived from old crusader banners of the time. |
