Denmark became a constitutional monarchy in 1849 with the implementation of a new constitution. The monarch is formally head of state, a mainly traditional role, as executive power is exercised by the prime minister and the cabinet ministers. The Danish Parliament, known as the Folketing, houses no more than 179 members and has legislative power. Elections for parliament must be held once every four years, but the prime minister can call an early election. If parliament should prevail in a vote of no confidence against the prime minister, his entire government leaves power. Monarch: Queen Margrethe II. Prime Minister: Anders Fogh Rasmussen. |
