| THE BOY WHO WENT LOOKING FOR YESTERDAY Story by Claribel Alegría |
![]() |
What a great day yesterday was, thought Christopher as he stretched awake between the sheets. I saw so many things in the circus: trapeze artists in bright colors, dancers, clowns, a panther, lots of elephants an dogs that did tricks. I wish it were yesterday again. Maybe, he thought, I can find it. It's still early and it shouldn't be very far away. Christopher reached the river "Have you seen yesterday?" he asked. "Yes," the river answered, "it passed by a few hours ago" "In what direction was it headed? I want to find it" With a humid gesture the river pointed toward the west Christopher kept walking until he came to a clearing where there was a huge cedar. "Have you seen yesterday?" The tree thought for a moment, then shook all its leaves like it was tossing thoughts back and forth and said: "I don't remember seeing it. Are you looking for it? "Yes," Christopher said. "I'm trying to find it" "Maybe it's in the woods. Why are you looking for yesterday? Look what a beautiful day today is" The road was wide. Christopher asked f it had seen yesterday. "All yesterdays pass by here," responded the road "I want to find it" the boy said impatiently. "Do you think it's in the woods?" "Can't say," said the road with a big yawn. "Why do you want to find it? All yesterdays pass here with the same expression of fatigue on their faces. But today is beautiful and full of dreams. It's sad to see it go by when it's become yesterday. Christopher reached the woods and lay down in the grass which accepted him affectionately. He pulled out of his pocket the two mangos and the tortilla which he had brought and started to eat avidly. A brook that passed nearby sang an invitation to come drink from its waters. Christopher ran to it and using the hollow of his hand drank until he had satisfied his thirst. Fat drops of rain began to fall. And then the clouds threw out great streams of water and refreshed the earth. "How beautiful is the rain," Christopher said aloud. "It makes me want to skip and jump". It rained for a long time. It seemed like it was never going to clear up. Christopher laughed as he felt the water streaming down his back. "Have you seen yesterday pass through the woods?" he asked, drawing near an izote flower he had not seen before. The flower didn't answer. Christopher repeated the question. "I don't know yesterday," the flower said finally. "The water's touch just opened me". Christopher stood there amazed. It seemed to him it was the first time he had really seen a flower. Looking for yesterday had opened his eyes. Christopher crossed a stream and saw a turtle covered with moss who walked with a calm of centuries. The turtle its head when he saw him. "Don't be afraid," said Christopher. "I've only come to ask you if you've seen yesterday". "Forget yesterday and accept the beauty of today" "I want to find yesterday", he said impatiently. "Silly boy". The turtle stretched his neck further out. "Why are you all hung up on finding yesterday when today is more beautiful still?". "Have you seen yesterday?" he asked. "I'm the fly that only lives a day. I was born a few hours ago and now I'm almost at the end of my life. What's yesterday like?" said the fly. "Beautiful. Full of color and lots of elephants. But today is even more beautiful. In the circus yesterday I couldn't talk to the animals, but today I made friends with you and with the turtle. I feel as happy as yesterday or even more so. Stars began to fill the sky. Christopher was dazed by the infinity which opened up in front of his eyes. I went looking for yesterday and I found today which is even more beautiful, he thought. He didn't want to let it escape. "Run and catch up with it", said a voice that opened up inside. When dawn arrived, it found him sleeping, clutching today in his arms.
