Unit 1: The Age of Exploration

• The First Americans - Loaded with information, maps, pictures, charts. Excellent site for individual or whole class research.
• First American Forefathers - There is a map of the US and you click on the picture of the famous Native American from that region.  Great for research projects.
• Hot Topic List for Native Americans - A list of various sites with information about specific tribes of North America.
• Christopher Columbus - This site brings the student through the different voyages.
• Ongoing Voyage - 1492: An Ongoing Voyage: represents an exhibit of items and information about Christopher Columbus.  The site contains information about Columbus the man, exploration, and the world in 1492.
• Hot Topic List for Explorers - A list of links to sites containing a variety of information about explorers, including biographical background information.

• Maryland Hot Topics - Links to a variety of sites containing information about our state.  This would be a useful site to use throughout the year for nearly every Social Studies unit.
• Maryland Historical Society - This home page provides links to sites with great information about our state's rich history and its recent past.

• Maryland Counties - Links to information about the counties of Maryland.
• Maryland Geography - A brief article about the geography of our state.  This site includes a map of the state which features major cities, bodies of water, and neighboring states.
• Maryland Land Features Map - A color-enhanced satellite image of Maryland which shows the state's three major geographical regions.
• Places to Visit in Maryland - This page from the Maryland State Kid's Site offers links to many places to go in our state. Consider using this page to plan a virtual tour of Maryland - a great way to enhance your geography unit.

• American Revolution - This site was created by Seventh Grade students and provides information on the different events.
• The American Revolution for Kids - This site includes timelines, games, maps and more.  Very cool site!
• Maryland Archives - This site includes much information about Maryland's history -- Maryland Day, Courses in History, Museum without walls, and the Electronic Classroom are just a few of the topics.
• Maryland Currency - This site has pictures of colonial money.
• Mayflower - Anything you need to know about the Mayflower and more. This site has links to many different facts, pictures, and maps.
• Research the Revolutionary War - This site includes links about the role of African Americans during the Revolutionary War.  James Fourteen and others are included; student projects are great.
• Revolution Links - This site has links to cover the cooperation, compromise, and conflict objectives for the different Revolutionary War events. There are links to for important people too.
• The Road to Liberty - Excellent site based on the PBS series about the American Revolution. Includes a multiple choice test for students which follows our curriculum perfectly.
• Schoolhouse Rock - History Rock - Lyrics for the songs about the American Revolution and other aspects of our nation's history and government.
• Valley Forge Historical Society - This site provides information on the Valley Forge encampment, George Washington, and soldiers. Includes primary sources, images of artifacts, time line, maps, and frequently asked questions.

• Antietam Battlefield on the Web - This site provides maps, pictures and plenty of historical information about this significant Civil War battle fought on Maryland soil.
• Antietam Battlefield Images - Color pictures of this National Park and images from the 1997 re-enactment of the famous battle.  This site is a great resource for students who want to see what the battle was like.
• Fort McHenry - An informative site which features kid-friendly text supported by pictures, paintings and music, including the National Anthem.
• Great Baltimore Fire - This page provides a brief overview of this historic event.
• Great Baltimore Fire Images - See downloadable images taken shortly after the fire destroyed much of downtown Baltimore.

• B&O Railroad Museum - The home page for one of America's oldest rail systems, based right here in Maryland!
• Howard County - This site offers information about our county's government and many other topics of interest, including a link to the celebration of Howard County's 150th Anniversary.
• Maryland's African American Heritage - Learn about significant African Americans who have made a difference in the development of our state, our nation and our world.
• Maryland Kids' Page - A great site designed just for kids, with plenty of useful information about our state.
• Maryland State Archives - Find information about the State House in Annapolis, maps of Maryland, and how to care for Maryland's flag.  There's more here, too!  This site is a great resource for anyone who wants to learn about our state.
