The Gundams were made by the colonies to fight for their freedom. In time, the pilots forgot their overall mission and went on their own missions to destroy any enemy they came across. The Gundams themselves are extremely strong and are made of Gundamium Alloy.
The Gundams are unlike any other mobile suit that has been produced. Zechs cannot harness the power of the Gundam he comes to pilot because of its power and speed. All of the Gundams have a mind of their own, the first one to do so is the Wing Zero, Heero's Gundam. The system takes control of the pilot's mind and makes him think that anyone who fights in his/her enemy. The human piloting it goes to his limits and is weakened by the Gundam. Heero harnesses this power and increases his military capabilities ten fold.
Anyone who tries and pilots the Gundams without being a Gundam pilot, will be destroyed by its power and speed. They haven't been trained as Gundam pilots, and until they do so, they will never harness the power a Gundam holds, or become like the original pilots..
There is a curse that has been told from mouth to mouth that anyone who sees a Gundam, shall not live to tell about it. In the begining, this comes true, many people died because they turned and saw what they weren't supposed to. But later on, the Gundams are widely known and most people live to see another Gundam, or another day for that matter.
