Kalthorn
Player Character Bio
Player: Gary G. since March 2004; Campaign: Darwin's Realm
Bio written by Gary G.

Kalthorn grew up without a father, or at least not his real father. He was different than most other kids. Bigger and paler of skin, he stood out like a sore thumb whenever he went into the village near his woodland home. Often the object of scorn and ridicule, he would not come to understand why he was different until later in adolescence.

His stepfather, Galston was generally a good person, but he had a hard time dealing with his son. He wasn’t exactly mean to Kalthorn, but he demanded hard work and discipline from him. The fact that many people thought of his stepson as a freak just made him push Kalthorn even harder. Developing a strong skill base and a hard work ethic in the boy was the best way he could fathom to provide a future for him. After all, it is hard enough for normal people to survive in the world, let alone a bastard half-giant.

Kalthorn’s mother seemed to be shy of most people, or maybe shy isn’t the right word. Timid might fit better. Always mistrustful, Loriell found she preferred the company of her son and husband over any others. She spent a lot of time teaching Kalthorn how to tend her many herb gardens and to how to make a few different kinds of simple potions to sell. She also got him involved with her grove, where he learned how to utilize natures powers. She spent all of her time with Kalthorn while Galston escorted caravans through the mountain passes.

When Kalthorn was old enough, Galston decided that he needed to start training him in the ways of orienteering and tracking. He also taught him bowmanship, and swordmanship. All essential tools in this day and age. This experience was all gained while escorting and traveling the caravan routes, where these skills were most important of all to the survival of the group.

It was on one of these trips that Galston told Kalthorn of his conception. He and Loriell were both escorting a caravan through a pass just before winter set in. While out hunting venison for the travelers, the party was attacked by giants. When Galston returned to camp, he found that the men of the caravan were all dead and the women all gone, except for Loriell. He found her in a heap by the fire. She was alive, barely. After healing her of her physical wounds, he learned of the horrid details of her rape. The mental wounds would never truly heal. By the descriptions she gave, Galston concluded that frost giants were to blame. By looking at the tracks, he concluded that there were only three of them and they looked as if they were not full grown adults. He did what any husband should do, he followed the tracks and slaughtered the frost giants while they were sleeping.

And so Galston’s hatred of frost giants was passed to Kalthorn, along with his and Loriell’s skills. With his work ethic, bowmanship, druidic powers and strength, Kalthorn intends to make his mark on the world in order to finally gain the respect he wanted so desperately since childhood.
