Alsagar was the only member of his family to survive the last epidemic of plague that swept across the land several years ago. As his parents were poor tenant farmers there was no estate and Alsagar was, at the age of 12, thrust out into the world to live or die as the fates decreed.

Since then he has survived through odd jobs, outright thievery, and miscellaneous work requiring flexible morality and ambiguous ethics. Although possessing considerable latent talents, he has not had the opportunities to develop them, most of his energies being spent seeking sustenance and simply keeping body & soul together. As he has grown older, the small town of Barovia and its surrounding environs have not provided sufficient opportunities for his ambitions.

In the fall of his 19th year, in a mood of frustration, he visited the nearby gypsy camp and requested the opportunity to learn the skills of sword and bow, and perhaps enhance his talents sufficiently to journey out, and survive in, the larger world that surely awaits.
