Samuel 25
|
|
1
¶And Samuel died; and all the Israelites were gathered together,
and lamented him, and buried him in his house at Ramah. And David
arose, and went down to the wilderness of Paran.
2 ¶And there was a man in Maon, whose possessions were in Carmel;
and the man was very great, and he had three thousand sheep, and
a thousand goats: and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel.
3 Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail:
and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance:
but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the
house of Caleb.
4 And David heard in the wilderness that Nabal did shear his sheep.
5 And David sent out ten young men, and David said unto the young
men, Get you up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my
name:
6 And thus shall ye say to him that liveth in prosperity, Peace
be both to thee, and peace be to thine house, and peace be unto
all that thou hast.
7 And now I have heard that thou hast shearers: now thy shepherds
which were with us, we hurt them not, neither was there ought missing
unto them, all the while they were in Carmel.
8 Ask thy young men, and they will shew thee. Wherefore let the
young men find favour in thine eyes: for we come in a good day:
give, I pray thee, whatsoever cometh to thine hand unto thy servants,
and to thy son David.
9 And when David's young men came, they spake to Nabal according
to all those words in the name of David, and ceased.
10 And Nabal answered David's servants, and said, Who is David?
and who is the son of Jesse? there be many servants now a days that
break away every man from his master.
11 Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I
have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men, whom I know not
whence they be?
12 ¶So David's young men turned their way, and went again,
and came and told him all those sayings.
13 And David said unto his men, Gird ye on every man his sword.
And they girded on every man his sword; and David also girded on
his sword: and there went up after David about four hundred men;
and two hundred abode by the stuff.
14 But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife, saying,
Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to salute our
master; and he railed on them.
15 But the men were very good unto us, and we were not hurt, neither
missed we any thing, as long as we were conversant with them, when
we were in the fields:
16 They were a wall unto us both by night and day, all the while
we were with them keeping the sheep.
17 Now therefore know and consider what thou wilt do; for evil is
determined against our master, and against all his household: for
he is such a son of Belial, that a man cannot speak to him.
18 ¶Then Abigail made haste, and took two hundred loaves, and
two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five measures
of parched corn, and an hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred
cakes of figs, and laid them on asses.
19 And she said unto her servants, Go on before me; behold, I come
after you. But she told not her husband Nabal.
20 And it was so, as she rode on the ass, that she came down by
the covert of the hill, and, behold, David and his men came down
against her; and she met them.
21 Now David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all that this
fellow hath in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all
that pertained unto him: and he hath requited me evil for good.
22 So and more also do God unto the enemies of David, if I leave
of all that pertain to him by the morning light any that pisseth
against the wall.
23 And when Abigail saw David, she hasted, and lighted off the ass,
and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground,
24 And fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me let
this iniquity be: and let thine handmaid, I pray thee, speak in
thine audience, and hear the words of thine handmaid.
25 Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this man of Belial, even
Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly
is with him: but I thine handmaid saw not the young men of my lord,
whom thou didst send.
26 Now therefore, my lord, as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth,
seeing the LORD hath withholden thee from coming to shed blood,
and from avenging thyself with thine own hand, now let thine enemies,
and they that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.
27 And now this blessing which thine handmaid hath brought unto
my lord, let it even be given unto the young men that follow my
lord.
28 I pray thee, forgive the trespass of thine handmaid: for the
LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house; because my lord fighteth
the battles of the LORD, and evil hath not been found in thee all
thy days.
29 Yet a man is risen to pursue thee, and to seek thy soul: but
the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with the
LORD thy God; and the souls of thine enemies, them shall he sling
out, as out of the middle of a sling.
30 And it shall come to pass, when the LORD shall have done to my
lord according to all the good that he hath spoken concerning thee,
and shall have appointed thee ruler over Israel;
31 That this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of heart unto
my lord, either that thou hast shed blood causeless, or that my
lord hath avenged himself: but when the LORD shall have dealt well
with my lord, then remember thine handmaid.
32 ¶And David said to Abigail, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel,
which sent thee this day to meet me:
33 And blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou, which hast kept
me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself
with mine own hand.
34 For in very deed, as the LORD God of Israel liveth, which hath
kept me back from hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come
to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning
light any that pisseth against the wall.
35 So David received of her hand that which she had brought him,
and said unto her, Go up in peace to thine house; see, I have hearkened
to thy voice, and have accepted thy person.
36 ¶And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast
in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal's heart was merry
within him, for he was very drunken: wherefore she told him nothing,
less or more, until the morning light.
37 But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out
of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart
died within him, and he became as a stone.
38 And it came to pass about ten days after, that the LORD smote
Nabal, that he died.
39 And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be
the LORD, that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand
of Nabal, and hath kept his servant from evil: for the LORD hath
returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent
and communed with Abigail, to take her to him to wife.
40 And when the servants of David were come to Abigail to Carmel,
they spake unto her, saying, David sent us unto thee, to take thee
to him to wife.
41 And she arose, and bowed herself on her face to the earth, and
said, Behold, let thine handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of
the servants of my lord.
42 And Abigail hasted, and arose, and rode upon an ass, with five
damsels of hers that went after her; and she went after the messengers
of David, and became his wife.
43 David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they were also both of
them his wives.
44 But Saul had given Michal his daughter, David's wife, to Phalti
the son of Laish, which was of Gallim.

1 ¶Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
2 Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD;
I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals,
when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was
not sown.
3 Israel was holiness unto the LORD, and the firstfruits of his
increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon
them, saith the LORD.
4 Hear ye the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families
of the house of Israel:
5 Thus saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in
me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity,
and are become vain?
6 Neither said they, Where is the LORD that brought us up out of
the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a
land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought, and of the
shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and
where no man dwelt?
7 And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit thereof
and the goodness thereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled my land,
and made mine heritage an abomination.
8 The priests said not, Where is the LORD? and they that handle
the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and
the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do
not profit.
9 ¶Wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the LORD, and
with your children's children will I plead.
10 For pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send unto Kedar,
and consider diligently, and see if there be such a thing.
11 Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but
my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.
12 Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid,
be ye very desolate, saith the LORD.
13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me
the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken
cisterns, that can hold no water.
14 ¶Is Israel a servant? is he a homeborn slave? why is he
spoiled?
15 The young lions roared upon him, and yelled, and they made his
land waste: his cities are burned without inhabitant.
16 Also the children of Noph and Tahapanes have broken the crown
of thy head.
17 Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken
the LORD thy God, when he led thee by the way?
18 And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the
waters of Sihor? or what hast thou to do in the way of Assyria,
to drink the waters of the river?
19 Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings
shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing
and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my
fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.
20 ¶For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and burst thy bands;
and thou saidst, I will not transgress; when upon every high hill
and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the harlot.
21 Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how
then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine
unto me?
22 For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap,
yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD.
23 How canst thou say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after
Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou
art a swift dromedary traversing her ways;
24 A wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind
at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they
that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall
find her.
25 Withhold thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst:
but thou saidst, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers,
and after them will I go.
26 As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of
Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests,
and their prophets,
27 Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast
brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not
their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise,
and save us.
28 But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise,
if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according
to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.
29 ¶Wherefore will ye plead with me? ye all have transgressed
against me, saith the LORD.
30 In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction:
your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.
31 O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness
unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are
lords; we will come no more unto thee?
32 Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my
people have forgotten me days without number.
33 Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love? therefore hast thou also
taught the wicked ones thy ways.
34 Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor
innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these.
35 Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall
turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest,
I have not sinned.
36 Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt
be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria.
37 Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine
head: for the LORD hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt
not prosper in them.

Matthew
13

1 ¶The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the
sea side.
2 And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that
he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the
shore.
3 And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold,
a sower went forth to sow;
4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls
came and devoured them up:
5 Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and
forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:
6 And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they
had no root, they withered away.
7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked
them:
8 But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some
an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.
9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou
unto them in parables?
11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you
to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is
not given.
12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have
more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken
away even that he hath.
13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see
not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.
14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith,
By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye
shall see, and shall not perceive:
15 For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull
of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they
should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should
understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should
heal them.
16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they
hear.
17 For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men
have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen
them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard
them.
18 Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.
19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth
it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which
was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way
side.
20 But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is
he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;
21 Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for
when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by
and by he is offended.
22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth
the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches,
choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth
the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth
forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
24 ¶Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom
of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:
25 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the
wheat, and went his way.
26 But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then
appeared the tares also.
27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir,
didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath
it tares?
28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said
unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?
29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root
up also the wheat with them.
30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of
harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the
tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat
into my barn.
31 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of
heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and
sowed in his field:
32 Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown,
it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the
birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.
33 Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is
like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures
of meal, till the whole was leavened.
34 All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables;
and without a parable spake he not unto them:
35 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying,
I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have
been kept secret from the foundation of the world.
36 Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house:
and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable
of the tares of the field.
37 He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed
is the Son of man;
38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the
kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;
39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end
of the world; and the reapers are the angels.
40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so
shall it be in the end of this world.
41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather
out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;
42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing
and gnashing of teeth.
43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom
of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
44 ¶Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid
in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for
joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that
field.
45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking
goodly pearls:
46 Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold
all that he had, and bought it.
47 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast
into the sea, and gathered of every kind:
48 Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and
gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away.
49 So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come
forth, and sever the wicked from among the just,
50 And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be
wailing and gnashing of teeth.
51 Jesus saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They
say unto him, Yea, Lord.
52 Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed
unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder,
which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.
53 ¶And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these
parables, he departed thence.
54 And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in
their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence
hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?
55 Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary?
and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?
56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this
man all these things?
57 And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet
is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.
58 And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.
