Samuel 18

1
¶And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto
Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David,
and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
2 And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home
to his father's house.
3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him
as his own soul.
4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and
gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his
bow, and to his girdle.
5 And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself
wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted
in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul's
servants.
6 ¶And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned
from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of
all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with
tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick.
7 And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul
hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.
8 And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he
said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they
have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?
9 And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.
10 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from
God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house:
and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was
a javelin in Saul's hand.
11 And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even
to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice.
12 ¶And Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with
him, and was departed from Saul.
13 Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain
over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.
14 And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the LORD
was with him.
15 Wherefore when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely,
he was afraid of him.
16 But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and
came in before them.
17 And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will
I give thee to wife: only be thou valiant for me, and fight the
LORD'S battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but
let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.
18 And David said unto Saul, Who am I? and what is my life, or my
father's family in Israel, that I should be son in law to the king?
19 But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul's daughter should
have been given to David, that she was given unto Adriel the Meholathite
to wife.
20 And Michal Saul's daughter loved David: and they told Saul, and
the thing pleased him.
21 And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a snare to
him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Wherefore
Saul said to David, Thou shalt this day be my son in law in the
one of the twain.
22 And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David secretly,
and say, Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants
love thee: now therefore be the king's son in law.
23 And Saul's servants spake those words in the ears of David. And
David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king's son in
law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?
24 And the servants of Saul told him, saying, On this manner spake
David.
25 And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth
not any dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be
avenged of the king's enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall
by the hand of the Philistines.
26 And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David
well to be the king's son in law: and the days were not expired.
27 Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the
Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins,
and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the
king's son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.
28 And Saul saw and knew that the LORD was with David, and that
Michal Saul's daughter loved him.
29 And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David's
enemy continually.
30 Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to
pass, after they went forth, that David behaved himself more wisely
than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.

|
1 ¶For Zion's sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem's
sake I will not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as
brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth.
2 And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy
glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of
the LORD shall name.
3 Thou shalt also be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD, and
a royal diadem in the hand of thy God.
4 Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land
any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah,
and thy land Beulah: for the LORD delighteth in thee, and thy land
shall be married.
5 For as a young man marrieth a virgin, so shall thy sons marry
thee: and as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so shall thy
God rejoice over thee.
6 ¶I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall
never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the
LORD, keep not silence,
7 And give him no rest, till he establish, and till he make Jerusalem
a praise in the earth.
8 The LORD hath sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength,
Surely I will no more give thy corn to be meat for thine enemies;
and the sons of the stranger shall not drink thy wine, for the which
thou hast laboured:
9 But they that have gathered it shall eat it, and praise the LORD;
and they that have brought it together shall drink it in the courts
of my holiness.
10 ¶Go through, go through the gates; prepare ye the way of
the people; cast up, cast up the highway; gather out the stones;
lift up a standard for the people.
11 Behold, the LORD hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, Say
ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold,
his reward is with him, and his work before him.
12 And they shall call them, The holy people, The redeemed of the
LORD: and thou shalt be called, Sought out, A city not forsaken.

|
1 ¶Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with
what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye,
but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote
out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye;
and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy
brother's eye.
6 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your
pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and
turn again and rend you.
7 ¶Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find;
knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth;
and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he
give him a stone?
10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your
children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give
good things to them that ask him?
12 ¶Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should
do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad
is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which
go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth
unto life, and few there be that find it.
15 ¶Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's
clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns,
or figs of thistles?
17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt
tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt
tree bring forth good fruit.
19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and
cast into the fire.
20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
21 ¶Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter
into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father
which is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied
in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name
done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from
me, ye that work iniquity.
24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth
them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon
a rock:
25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew,
and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon
a rock.
26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them
not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house
upon the sand:
27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew,
and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of
it.
28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the
people were astonished at his doctrine:
29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
