Military Dispatches Page Last Updated 05/21/2002 April, 1633: (Hostility Level 5) Continuing the program developed last month, General Follie and his general staff resolved to make a Big Push to puncture the enemy lines. Confident in their ability to shatter the enemy resolve, the majority of the staff goes on extended holiday in Nancy. Meanwhile, out on the battle lines, French charges are met with not only steely resolve, but with heavier-than-anticipated firepower. The Habsburg forces, stiffened by mercenary reinforcements, hold key territories and have fortified them with field pieces. The French charges are met with barrage after barrage, and ground is actually lost to the German onslaught.
View Regiments March, 1633: (Hostility Level 5) Following an international incident during the Minister of Foreign Affairs' consultation with Habsburg diplomats, tensions rise precipitously between the aggrieved nations of France and Germany. FF1 Spring, under the command of General Follie, is dispatched to the city of Nancy to secure the surrounding territory from enemy attack. His decision is to base III Brigade around the city itself, and to use the 1st Division (I and II Brigades) to sweep the surrounding countryside from south to north, using the city as its axis. Sadly, mismanagement from the Lieutenant Generals of the 1st Division stalls the advance prematurely, and raises the risk of counterattack, to which the current formation is vulnerable. Below is an abbreviated synopsis:
February, 1633: (Hostility Level 2) With the French forces sufficiently rallied, Brigadier Jean la Batt-Bleu pursued the enemy's lines relentlessly through sally-ports and gates, artfully using the city walls to conceal troop movements and preparations. With the dragoons and Borderers securing the city, the Crown Prince Cuirassiers swept the enemy off the field by month end.
The only unfortunate event of this month's action was the tragic death of Captain Lucien Grimaldi of the Cuirassiers' B Troop. Apparently outraged at his treatment by the Habsburg forces, the Captain fought with fierce bravery, routing their troops. January, 1633: (Hostility Level 2) After December's grim tidings, the French have begun to fight back with fervor. While the war has certainly not yet turned, neither have the Habsburg forces been allowed to make any inroads. Lt Colonel Roussel's area of command bore the brunt of a frontal assault by German forces, but a counterstrike by the Hellhounds (the new nickname of the 2nd Squadron of the CPC) drove the enemy outside the city walls. See the Gazette for more information.
A successful rescue was made of Captain Grimaldi of the CPC by the gentlemen of Paris under the command of Captain Arnauld de Belloc of the QOC. Assisting him were GSt, JPdA, PKVA, XdP, JLB, AldG and GndL. Upon his safe return to his regiment, Captain Grimaldi was given a furlough.. December, 1632: The situation appears bleak. The French Field Force 1 was sent to the defense of the city of Nancy on the German frontier. After preliminary difficulties, the citizens welcomed our French heroes. Almost as soon as the forces settled in, elements of the Holy Roman Imperial forces arrived and invested the city. By the month's end, the defenders were withdrawn to a small area within the walls, clustered around the cathedral. Campaign Results, December 1632
