| WHAT IS POINTILLISM? |
The word "pointillism" was coined in 1886 in reference to the work of Georges Seurat, one of the early exponents of Neo-Impressionism.
He experimented with dots of colour applied with a paintbrush rather than actual brushstrokes. Unfortunately he completed only seven canvases before his death in 1891.
Derek uses a technical pen to produce a much smaller dot to achieve the fine detail he requires for his black and white illustrations.
It is an intricate art technique requiring many hours to build up a suitable depth of form and shadow. A picture can take anywhere from several days to several weeks to complete.
Pointillism is an interesting way to transform ordinary photos into unique pieces of artwork.
Subjects range from friends or family, (especially old photos from the 1800's), the photo of the family pet, the front of the house, even the boat or car.
His work is drawn up on acid free card which is then given a protective coating once the picture is complete. About half of Derek's work is commissioned. |
