Joseph Longfellow b.9 Nov 1768

son of John Longfellow b.6 Jan 1740

I'm looking for some help on the family of Joseph like who his brothers were,Father& Mother etc.for additional proof of his line. He lived right in Murderkill Hundred,Kent,Delaware with several other Longfellows but have not established whether his father was John Longfellow b.1740 son of Joseph or whether it was Jonathan born 1715. It seems most of the descendants that lived in Murderkill were either descendants of William born 1712 or his brother Jonathan born 1715 and also there was their other brother Thomas that married Margeret Mercer.Other Longfellows living in Kent, Delaware included descendants of Joseph Longfellow first son of William b. 1679. Any new documentation on these familes would be greatly appreciated. Joseph Longfellow b.9 Nov 1768 as stated by the Veterans Administration for his service in the War of 1812 and which makes him fit into his rightful family better, married Tracy Merida abt 1795 in Kent,Delaware. Tracy died within 6 months of marriage and Joseph married again on 23 Jan 1802 to Mary Fowler in Kent, Delaware and 13 children came from this marriage. 1) John Thomas b. 25 Jun 1802 in Delaware? and he married Lucy Silvey 19 Apr 1826 in Decatur,Indiana 2) Joseph Longfellow b.5 Apr 1804 he married Anna Sullivan 8 Mar 1827 in Champaign,Ohio and second to Mary Pollock Ward 3)Anna b.20 Apr 1805 and she married Elias Sullivan 25 Mar 1830 in Champaign,Ohio. 4) Elizabeth (Betty)b. 20 Apr 1807 and she married George Kiger in Champaign,Ohio. 5)Thomas 15 Apr 1809 6)Tilghman b. 1812 in Concord,Champaign,Ohio and he married Maria Tharp 1 Mar 1833 in Logan,Ohio 7)Mary (Polly) b. abt 1814 and she married Jacob Haynes 8 Mar 1832 in Logan, Ohio 8)Sarah (Sallie)b.abt 1816 and she married Pearson Inskeep 12 Mar 1834 in Logan,Ohio 9)Margaret b. abt 1818 and she married Abraham Oarsbaugh 11 Jan 1838 in Logan, Ohio. 10)Perry abt 1820 11) Rebecca b.abt 1821 12)Ellen b.abt 1823 13)Aaron ? b.abt 1825. He and his family moved probably after at least one child was born, in April or May of 1805 to Concord, Champaign,Ohio some say by way of Kentucky. It would certainly be nice to find him on the 1810 census. He is remembered as a man short in stature, but strong and vital. He fought in the war of 1812. In 1822, Josephs wife Mary was thrown from a horse on her way to church, and died of the injuries received from the fall. In 1826, at the age of 60 Joseph Longfellow married the 30 year old widow Crow-- Martha Hull Crow. Nothing daunted,Joseph and Martha (Hull) Longfellow proceeded to have the following children: 1)Lemuel Vincent b. 23 Jun 1828 in Champaign,Ohio. He married Tabitha Purcell Nov 1858 2) {Rev.} Nathan Morris Longfellow b.11 Apr 1830 in Concord,Champaign,Ohio. He was a Baptist Minister and married Mary Caroline Creamer on 11 Apr 1853 in Jeffersonville,Ohio and they had several children 3)David Syms Longfellow b.16 Apr 1832 and he married first Barbara Greider and second too Sarah Ellen Hindbaugh 4) Silas Nelson b.5 Jun 1834 married 4 Jun 1857 to Minerva A. Russell in Champaign, Ohio. 5) Amos Marion b.21 Jun 1837. He married Caroline Davis 27 Dec 1859 Champaign, Ohio. Joseph and Martha lived on the farm in Concord near Urbana, until Martha died 2 Aug 1864, and Joseph died a year later, 11 Dec 1865 at the age of 99 his tombstone says but Joseph himself declared to a Judge on the 4 Apr 1855 that he was 86 years old which would have made him born 9 Nov 1768 as other Bible records also declare and which I believe makes him fit correctly in his family, another example to confirm his correct birthyear is what he declared on the 1850 census on 5 Sep 1850 that he was 81 years old. This would make him born in 1768 and at his next birthday on 9 Nov 1850 he would have then been 82 years old. To View this Census record click here---> Census I've stewed for 10 years over Joseph's birthdate as 1766 as his older brother Elijah was b.28 Mar 1767 and which would have only been 4 month's later for another child (Elijah) it simply didn't work. Now he fits perfectly in his family. Joseph and Martha are both buried at the Concord Methodist Church Cemetery near Urbana,Ohio. Incidentally, Joseph Longfellow voted in every Presidential election, first for Washington and last for Lincoln. Appreciation for contributing the pictures of the tombstone Markers of Joseph and Martha goes to Ralph Longfellow. Anyone with further information on perhap's the brother's that he came to Ohio with or more descendants of Joseph please help out with information in this area. Maybe eventually everyone will have a clear picture of the origins of this family.Click here to email me---->[email protected]
