John Longfellow was the son of Elijah Longfellow and was born 12 Sep 1794 in Murderkill, Kent, Delaware. He was the firstborn child of 5 Children. His mother was believed to be Elizabeth Badger. Elijah moved with his family about 1803 from Delaware but I believe he purchased land in Sep of 1813 in Hamilton,Butler,Ohio. Where was he between 1803 and 1813 ? That may solve the puzzle of who John's first wife Nancy was. John and Nancy may have married in another state or even the same state prior to Sep 1813 as they both would have been 19 years old by then. Elijah may have made the move with Joseph Longfellow who also moved to Ohio about the same time. There is a story of Joseph Longfellow b.1768 moved to Ohio with two of his brother's. From the Butler County Web site there is a biographical History and Cyclopaedia that is online and a link here that you may get to it about John Longfellow saying that he arrived in Butler County in 1804 as well as additional details at the bottom of this web page about John Longfellow b.1794 Click Here----->Biography of John Longfellow If anyone has more information on Joseph and his brother's that moved to Ohio please contact me. John Longfellow married first to a Nancy abt 1813/1814 possibly in Ohio or some other state but have not found the record of their marriage yet. Their first child was 1)Jonathan born 6 Mar 1815 in Butler, Ohio. He later moved to Millport, Missouri. 2)Elijah Elijah Longfellow b.25 Aug 1817 also in Butler,Ohio. Nancy died 20 Jan 1818 possibly connected with childbirth. John second married to Elizabeth Stevens on 18 Dec 1819 in Butler,Ohio. Elijah b. 1817 married first Frances Stevens on 5 Nov 1840 in Butler, Ohio and they had 5 children: 1)Sarah Jane Longfellow b. 1842 in Butler, Ohio. She married Jonathan Sallee on 26 Apr 1866 in Knox, Missouri. Apparently Elijah and Jonathan (brothers) moved together in about 1843 to Millport, Knox, Missouri. 2)Margaret Elizabeth Longfellow b. 1844 in Millport,Knox,Missouri. 3)Jonathan b. 1847 in Missouri and he married Emma A. ? 4) Susan J. Longfellow b.1855 in Knox, Missouri 5)Allen Longfellow b. 16 Feb 1857 in Knox, Missouri and he married Sarah Emily Morrison 17 Feb 1884.After Allen was born I'm not certain if Frances died about 1857 but Elijah married again to Sibba Jane McWilliams in 1858 and they had 5 children;William B., Emma L.,Mary M., Sherman, and Ida May. With John's(1794) second wife Elizabeth Stevens they had seven children: 1)Delia Longfellow b.11 Oct 1820 in Butler,Ohio 2)Rebecca Longfellow b. 3 Oct 1822 3)Daniel b.20 Nov 1824 and he had at least two children James Hazeltine and Frances. 4)Levi 14 Mar 1826 5)John J. b.15 may 1828 and he married Harriet Moudy and they had Othias M. Longfellow. 6) Mary Jane Longfellow b.11 May 1832 in Butler,Ohio and she married Barton S. James on 30 Nov 1854 in Hamilton,Butler,Ohio. 7) James Longfellow b.3 Apr 1834 and he married Edith L. Hawks in 1876. John Longfellow's wife Elizabeth Stevens may have died due to complications from child birth.John remaried again to Elizabeth Rowland not sure of the date if anyone knows or has information on that or one Rebecca that is found on John's tombstone please email me.
