Mike Rotch's TetriNET Page

Welcome to my TetriNET Page. TetriNET is a wonderfully addictive modern version of the most popular game of all time, with tons of added features including "attack and defensive specials," can be played with others on the internet, and much more. St0rmCat deserves all the love in the world for creating this game.

I have been a player of TetriNET for more than three years, and I have enough skill and experience to beat nearly all other players. Too bad I haven't played in about three months though. I have spent all three years playing cookies (with specials), about two years mastering pure (without specials), and only about three months working with TFast.

A beta form of  the new version of TetriNET has been released, and I have tried it out, and it is quite fun, with great music, a better interface, and tons of new features. However, I accidentally deleted the beta version off my computer, and I have seen that St0rmCat has requested that the TetriNET2 software is to not be uploaded on any websites at this time. Currently, TetriNET2 is a work in progress, and StormCat is open to suggestions. You just might find him at the Official TetriNET Message Board.

This page contains several TetriNET-related stuff, including one hell of a large list of tips, most likely the largest list on the net, all written by Mike Rotch. And remember, cheaters suck and the TetriNET .midi ain't THAT bad.

Here it is: Possibly the largest list of TetriNET tips on the internet! Written by Mike Rotch!

Block-Associated Tips

Please note that these and all tips found here are "general tips." This means that sometimes you should not follow a certain tip at some point in the game. Remember, good common sense and experience are the absolute best help there is, and only you can give those to yourself. Yes, very corny, but very true.

Most players stack and use specials not at the same time (try learning how to do both at once). While stacking, the next special should be an important one. GREEN = rank of importance in being the next special RED = offensive move YELLOW = defensive move ORANGE = offensive and defensive move WHITE = notes
A Add Line

8 of 9

Adds one line to the bottom of a field. In most servers, this special is the most frequent.
Best when used repeatedly on one person within a short time period. Wait until your opponent is a couple lines away from death, then add lines for a quick nearly-guaranteed death.
After being nuked, use an A or two on yourself to save time: instead of filling up all 12 empty holes, you only have to fill up a couple holes.
None.
C Clear Line

7 of 9

Clears the bottom line of a field.
Look at the southernmost line of your opponents' fields: if there is a good special there, or if that line is involved in a 2-4 lines at once thing, use on your opponent. Use them early in the game on opponents so they have more holes to fill, taking time away from them.
Use on yourself, especially if an O is at the bottom.
None.
N Nuke

6 of 9

Erases entire field. Kind of like you're starting all over again, without losing any specials you still have in your inventory.
Use on an opponent that has easy access to several good specials (Gs, Ss, Ns, etc.), or can get more than one of the good specials by getting 2+ lines at once (there are several other cases where it is best to nuke your opponent). It is better to waste an N on an opponent than allowing him/her to get 2+ switches.
Use on yourself when you're in trouble, obviously.
NukeSwitch:   If you have S after N, prepare for switching, nuke your opponent, then switch, leaving you with a cleared field, and your opponent with the switched field. FakeSwitch: make it obvious that you're planning on switching and hope that no one has noticed that you do not have an S. Some will mess themselves up hoping that you won't "switch" with them, but then N yourself so they messed themselves up for nothing.
R Random Blocks Clear

9 of 9

Randomly clears ten (10) blocks from a field.
Use on an opponent that is trying to get 2+ lines at once.
Use on yourself when you've been Block Bombed and you're desperate for clearing those floating blocks.
None.
S Switch

1 of 9

Swaps your field with the selected player's field. Everyone's favorite special.
None.
None.
Two of my favorite non-strategical switches: form a crooked Y on your field then switch, or two crooked vertical lines (one near but not on the edge, and one in the center) and then switch. If you have a switch in your inventory, it should generally be the next special available, unless you're like 4 Gs away from it. Quickly mess up your own field and switch with those who have easy access to the good specials, or those going for 4 lines at once.
B Clear Specials

2 of 9

Changes all specials on a field into regular blocks.
Use on an opponent with a field containing a lot of specials, or on a field with quick access to the important specials (G, N, S, O, etc).
Use on yourself if you have an unreachable O on your field and you won't mind losing all the other specials.
None.
G Gravity

3 of 9

Takes all the blocks on a field and "pulls" them down, eliminating any gaps on each vertical column.
Generally, none.
Use when you're in trouble. Drop the blocks in a way such that each column has a lot of blocks except one. Do this as quickly as possible, and you can also pull a FakeSwitch while doing this. Once you get the blue straight piece, G yourself, and you will see that you can get 4 lines at once using that blue piece. Do it well, and you will have several opportunities for Tetrises (4 lines at once).
GravSwitch and FakeSwitch: See the Nuke section.
Q BlockQuake

5 of 9

Randomly shifts the horizontal lines of a field by moving some blocks to the left and right
Best when used on an opponent aiming for 2+ lines at once. Also good when used frequently in about 10 second intervals on one opponent, so it's like their field is constantly getting messy.
If you can fit a block anywhere, use a Q on yourself, hoping that it'll create space to fit the block, if you don't mind using a Q on yourself.
None.
O Block Bomb

4 of 9

Clears the 3x3 portion that surrounds all of the Block Bombs on a field and scatters those blocks anywhere on the field.
Only effective when your opponent has an O on their field, so don't waste your Os unless you don't need them. Best when used early in the game. If you can, wait until your opponent places blocks to surround his/her O, so there will be more blocks scattered.
None.
Great block to use on yourself when planning a switch.

FAQ

Most of your questions can be answered after reading the readme file, "tetrinet.txt," included in the game (can be downloaded on this site too). Here is a list of frequently asked questions associated with TetriNET, along with brief answers. Still can't find an answer? Email me (link at top and bottom of this page) and I will help you to the best of my ability.

What the hell is TetriNET? "TetriNET, written by St0rmCat, is a multiplayer tetris game with weapons and supports up to 6 players at once. This makes TetriNET much more fun than the old fashion tetris! You can choose either playing team with your buddies or individually against all tetrinet addicts around the world. You can also chat with other players during the game. With a very cool music, sound effects, and beautiful images, you shouldn't miss this great game!"
How do I serve? Open TetriNET, click on the Server Settings Tab, enter a name in the upperleft text box, click on the Start Server button, and configure all your settings if needed.
What is an IP? How do I get my IP? First of all, IP is an acronym for Internet Protocol, and is generally a series of numbers. These numbers are like your internet address: whoever has access to this number has the possibility to connect with your computer. This is good because you can now play games with whoever has our IP. However, they can do bad things to your computer too. You should only give your IP to people you personally know and trust.

There are several ways to find your IP number. If you have AIM, AOL's internet instant messaging service, download the latest version. Open an IM window, right click on the text box,  select Insert, then IP Address. Remember to not give your IP to anyone if you do not know and trust them. If you do not have AIM, click on Start on the Windows Toolbar, then Run. Type "winipcfg" (without the quotation marks) and click OK. Your IP number is the series of numbers in the box next to "IP Address."

Where can I find public servers? The best, and possibly only place, to find TetriNET public servers is here: http://www.tetrinet.org/ip
Add color, style, etc. to my name/text? In the partyline chat area, you can change the font of the chat text (only affects your computer) by right clicking in the big text box, and clicking on "Change Font."

To add style (bold, italics, and underline) to your text in the partyline, hold ctrl and press: b for bold, i for italics, and u for underline. Repeat this process to disable the style.

For adding color to your text in the partyline, or to add color or style your TetriNET name, please look at the Download section of this page.

What are Themes? Where can I find them? A TetriNET theme is a set of music/graphics that are used for the game. The graphical part of the theme is the backround you see in your and other peoples' playing fields, and the pictures of blocks and special blocks. The music part is the sounds that are made during the game. All of these features are editable for your comfort of the game. Some are used to help you play better, while others are used because it looks cool.

You can find many themes in the Links section of http://zap.to/MikeRotch.

What is Pure? What is Cookies? Pure is TetriNET played without specials. The only way to attack in Pure is to get 2+ lines at once so you can add lines to all opponents. Pure games generally go much faster than regular games, and require more speed and accuracy. Cookies the term given to playing with specials, and the specials are also known as cookies. Cookies require more thinking and strategy, but speed is not as important and these games are generally more fun.
How do I fix this "General Protection Error" in TetriNET? See the Download section of this page.
What's the real secret to becoming a consistent winner? In my opinion, the secret to becoming a consistent winner is experience, common sense, and good hand-eye coordination. Experience is a requirement, as TetriNET is one of those game that are easy to learn, yet hard to master. Common sense is required in all games (duh!), especially in TetriNET. Most of the time, I can tell why someone, especially those who have equal experience or higher experience than me, has lost to me, if I won. And hand-eye coordination of course. You shouldn't make too many "I pressed the wrong button" excuses.
Are you single? Currently, yes.
If you were to play TetriNET with any celebrity, who would it be? I would love to have Angelina Jolie play TetriNET with Mike Rotch.
Views on cheating? Don't do it. C'mon now. It takes the fun out of the game. How can you even consider cheating after viewing all the tips I gave you on this page?
Running out of questions? Yeah, I added too many rows to this table and I can't think of anything else.
Why do a lot of people play TetriNET after getting drunk/high? That's what I'm wondering...
