Step 1- Ripping the movie to your harddrive

Overview: This is the first step of the process. In this step, you will rip a movie and remove macrovision and css encryption from the movie and copy the files to your PC's harddrive.

Almost all movies are encrypted which makes it impossible to do a straight up copy of the movie. And to make matters more difficult, most dvds are dual layered (DVD-9), while blank dvds are single layer (DVD-5). But we'll mess with that later on. I'll use my Behind Enemy Lines as an example.

Programs required:

DVD Decrypter

(alternative: Smartripper)

1. Put in your movie and open DVD Decrypter. We are only doing the movie (no menus or extras), so in DVD Decrypter, go to Edit > Select Main Movie Files. This will select only the movie files. I also rip the VIDEO_TS.IFO file (just hold down the CTRL button and click the file on the right side)

2. Then go to the Destination section and click the folder icon

A key thing when ripping DVDs is to be sure to have an organized method. I use four folders to keep the steps seperate and avoid confusion. For our example, i rip the movie files to folder 1.

3. Then click the Rip Button. DVD Decrypter will now rip the movie files to your PC (to the destination folder). This will take about 20 minutes or so.

4. Once DVD Decrypter finishes, it will popup a message. Step1 is now done.

Lets move onto Step 2 - Stripping extra streams and using Ifoeditor.
