88 DEFINITIONS
Sometimes I find myself
using slang or words that we use back home in England to
describe this brilliant game of footy(see what I
mean). I also have this very annoying habit of
having to constantly nickname things. Well, this will
help all those who struggle with my grammar.
DEFINITION
A statement of the meaning
of a word or word group; also, the action or process of
defining.
The Wall
To provide, separate, or surround with or as if
with a wall. Also, a wooden structure running parallel
in behind the 88 player's bench where pep talks,
discussions and eating oranges take place before,
during and after games.
"Have A Go"
Whenever one of our 88's take a crack at the
goal.
Fezz
A round red felt hat that has a flat top and a
tassel but no brim. Also, our veteran back-four
hero, Brandon.
Lovely
Characterized by beauty, fair and pretty. Also,
a magnificent through ball or strike by any number
of 88's.
Stanza
A group of lines forming a division ofa poem.
Also, either the 1st or 2nd half .
Squeegy
A blade set crosswise on a handle used for
spreading or wiping liquid on, across, or off a surface.
Also, our left-footed, under-aged southpaw, Eric.
Cage
An openwork enclosure for confining an animal.
Also, Spidey's net.
Greggors
Our tallest and fastest 88 who also goes by the
name, Greg.
Tables
A flat slab or plague. Also, the statistics
where Darlington usually sits at the top.
Clinic Finish
Excellent goal scoring .
Keeps
Another name for goalie or keeper.
Peanut
An annual herb related to the pea but having
pods that ripen underground. Also, our smallest 88 who
goes by the name, Nathanael.
Pitch
The action or manner of throwing. Also, the
field we play on.
Knappy
In England we call this a baby's diaper. Also,
in this country it can only be Darlington 88's leading
goal scorer, Andrew.
The Lads
Youth or fellows. Also, our 88's.
Nil
Zero or nothing.
Footings
The placing of one's feet in a stable position.
Also, the spot where our 88's are situated in the standings
or tables.
Frenchy
We know him as Chris Wyman.
Fortnight
Two weeks or 14 days.
Spidey or Spiderman
A Marvel Comic's Super Hero character.
Also, our goal keeper, Stephen.
Switch
A slender flexible whip, rod or twig. Also,
changing ball direction on the field.
Chrissy
Our 88's all time leading points getter.
Box
Typically a rectangular receptacle often with a
cover. Also, Stephen's area in front of his goal.
Nick
A small notch or groove. Also, Yours Sincerely,
Darlington 88 Manager...
Clean Sheet
When Spidey and our 88's play a complete game
without allowing any goals against. Also known as
shut-out.
Shake 'n' Blake
One of two new 88's in the 2003 Outdoor Season
who has already become one of the 88 penalty takers who
goes by the name Blake.
88's
A double digit number that falls between 87
and 89. Also, Darlington's sixteen elite footballers.
Air
The gaseous mixture surrounding the Earth.
Also, once our Most
Sportsmanlike 88 that still works harder than
anyone else.
Hydros
A place we call home.
Penalty Taker
The individual that takes a penalty shot from
the spot.
Age
To become or cause to become mature or mellow.
Or as we might say, Adrian Butters.
The Spot
Stain or blemish. Also, the location in front of
the keeper where penalty shots are taken from.
Coach
A large closed 4-wheeled carriage with an
elevated outside front seat for the driver. Also, our
88's headman Vince.
Solina Winds
Those nasty winds that sweep off Lake Ontario
and carry across our Hydro Fields.
Jere
Our 2002 MVP that has tree trunks for thighs.
Scotty
Scottish Terrier. Also, our 88 Captain and
longtime veteran, Scott.
Unlucky
Unfortunate or ill-fated. Also, whenever one of
our 88's make a mistake or blunder.
Football
The ball used in football. Also, the sport which
we call soccer.
Grant
To allow, to permit, to consent to. Also, our
asistant coach.
Mark
Something as a line or fixed object
designed to record position. Also, our free kick
specialist and corner kick taker.
Strike
To touch or hit sharply. Also, a tremendous shot
by any one of our 88's.
Kyle
Our 88's centre mid.
Well-In
Another slang term for just keeping the ball in
touch.
Mikey
An 88 that has awesome dribbling techniques that
plays up front.
Bar
A counter at which food and especially drinks is
served. Also, the horizontal piece of framework
attached to 2 posts which makes up Spidey's net.
Geoff
Our seasoned veteran that plays his heart out
for every game in every season.
Footy
Us Englishmen use this slang term for the
world's number one sport.
Thade
Our newest addition who brings a crafty and
unique flavour to this team.
A Stroll In The Park
Used often in context to Spidey having an easy
time with a save or other 88's during the course of
play.
