Buffy and Willow stare at their reflections in a mirror, horrified looks on their faces! The reason for their horror? The hideous green bridesmaid dresses they are wearing!
Anya walks into the room and bursts into tears of joy when she sees them, she thinks they look beautiful!!
In Xanders apartment, Xander is trying to keep the peace between his relatives, Anyas Demon friends and find his cufflinks (which are being worn as earings by his cousin Carol).
In the street outside, an old man suddenly appears from out of nowhere. He starts to walk down the street!
Later, at the wedding hall, Buffy is helping Xander put the finishing touches on his tux' and telling Xander how happy she is for him.
Willow is with Anya and Tara (who is also a bridesmaid) listening to Anya compose her wedding vows, and generaly helping her to get ready. Willow and Tara giggle and share looks as they listen to Anyas hilarious vows.
In the main hall Dawn (another Bridesmaid) is greeting the guests as they file in. Halfrek (yes, also a bridesmaid) gets a chilly reception from Dawn, as she arrives with D'Hoffryn. Dawn next greets Spike, and she seems a bit bemused by his over emphasising that he has brought a date, a skanky looking Goth girl!
A few of Xanders relatives talk with Anyas friends, and it's pretty obvious that the're not going to be getting on for long. Anya has told the Harris's that her friends are 'circus folk' to cover for their odd appearances and this is causing some of the Harris's to get nasty. Over at the bar Xanders Dad is starting to get very drunk.
The old man who mysteriously appeared earlier, is pushing his way through the guests intent on something.
Dawn meets up with Buffy and Xander as they head for the main room. She tells Buffy that Spike has brought a date, which seems to shock Buffy. Xander leaves them and enters the main room, he is immediately engulfed by guests, either congratulating him or moaning about the seating arrangements. The old man keeps trying to get his attention and finaly succeeds in Dragging Xander away from the other guests. Once alone he tells Xander that he mustn't go through with the wedding! He claims to be Xander....from the future!
There is another distractiom, this time caused by Xanders drunken father insulting just about everyone in the room. Buffy manages to calm him down a bit after which Mr Harris 'hits on her'. Buffy warns him off.
The old man gets Xanders attention back and they go into a side room. The old man shows Xander a glowing 'orb' which shines on Xanders face and seems to suck Xander into itself.
We see future Xander, looking exactly the same as wedding Xander, slumped in a chair with a beer in his hands, watching the TV. Two arguing children run in, a girl and a boy. The girl is clearly part Demon, with floppy ears. An older and more weary Anya enters on her way to work. They argue and are clearly not happy.
Next scene...Xander, still young and Tux clad, is in a restaurant with his not so happy family, The children are now teenagers, and the girl, Sarah, starts yelling at a drunken Xander, saying that she knows he isn't her father and she wishes he were dead.
Last scene.....A still young Xander and a very old Anya are arguing in a dingy kitchen. Anya bemoans the fact that Xander hasn't wanted to touch her since Buffy's death. The argument goes back and forth until Xander picks up a heavy frying pan and hits Anya in the head with it.
Back to the present and Xander is frantic to know what happens to Anya. The old man tells him that he can change the future now...by not getting married.
Spike and Buffy meet up in the main hall. Their conversation is awkward and Buffy admits that Spikes date has made her a little jealouse. Spike stops himself in mid apology and offers to leave, but Buffy tells him that he shouldn't. Spike comments that it's nice to see Buffy happy, that she glows. As Buffy is walking off he asks her if it hurts, she tells him yes and he thanks her. He then leaves the wedding.
Willow finds Buffy and tells her that they have to stall Anya, as Xander has gone missing.
Tara is still with Anya, going over her vows when Buffy comes in. Buffy makes a lame excuse about the minister having to go off to deliver a baby. Anya buys this excuse.
Stalling for time in the main hall (where the guests are getting decidedly restless) Buffy starts a game of charades. While Anya paces in the dressing room and Xander wanders the rain drenched streets.
Dawn is talking to a teenaged Demon boy and she confides in him that Xander has gone missing. Unfortunately Anya is passing by them and overhears. 'What d'ya mean Xander's missing' cries Anya, loud enough for everyone in the hall to hear.
The recriminations amongst the guests start, seemingly everyone blaming everyone else. The fighting begins.
Xanders cousin Carol tells Anya that she saw Xander talking to an old man, who she manages to point out to her. Anya goes to talk to him
The old man reveals himself to be Stuart Burns, a victim of her Vengeance Demon days. He then turns into a huge Demon. He explains that he showed Xander false visions of the future in order to scare him off.
Delighted by Anyas pain, he punches her, sending her flying. Buffy runs in to save Anya and starts to fight the Demon. The wedding guests stop their own fighting in order to watch.
Xander appears and Anya explains to him that the visions where false, meanwhile Buffy has managed to half strangle the Demon. Xander picks up a fake stone pillar and finishes the Demon off, by smashing in it's head.
Xander then tells Anya that he can't go through with the wedding. As Anya protests that the visions weren't real, Xander tells her he knows. But they could be real and he never wants to hurt her.
He leaves a heartbroken Anya to tell the guests.
Xander rents a drab room in a seedy motel, he is still wearing his sodden wedding Tuxedo.
Anya sits alone in the darkness, crying wretchedly. D'Hoffryn hands her a handkerchief, telling her that Xander domesticated her. He tells her it's time to do what she's good at. He offers her her old job back....as a Vengeance Demon.
