MY STORY An expression of shock and anger flashed across Zabers's face before it was replaced by a show of concern. "I thought you drowned or something...I was looking all over for you," Zaber said in a concerned tone as she studied the counselor. "Don't worry, I'm fine. I was just caught up in the current for a moment. Nothing I couldn't handle," replied the counselor with a smile. "Hm...where are the others, Daf and Yenney? he asked after a moment of searching the surrounding area. Zabers, taking a deep breath, "Well...we think that Yenney drowned when he fell into the water...he never resurfaced. Daf was probably eaten by that creature back at the camp." She cautiously glanced at the counselor to see how he would react. To her surprise, he still wore a smile while the rest of his face remained blank. Then, as if snapping out of a daydream, the counselor's face traded to confused and somewhat saddened expression. However, his limpid blue eyes sent out a wave of coldness as he stared at the river. "This is really a serious predicament." Zabers rolled her eyes, but stayed silent. "Our first order of business should be to escape from this dangerous forest area. Who knows what kind of things are out there?" said the counselor. "Well, I would have thought that you would know considering that you have been in this business for such a long time." His face showed a touch of anger before he regained his composure. "Apparently, there are a lot of new things that now occupy the forest," he replied calmly. Without anymore exchanges of words, the three began to walk along the river. Before long, they spotted a bunch of rocks sticking out from the river that led to the other side. They lined up in a single file wordlessly, first the counselor, then Zuxashi, and finally Zabers to cross the river. The counselor pranced effortlessly across the rocks and landed on the other side with a bow. Zuxashi just stepped calmly on each stone with the glistening can of blood swaying in her hands. Water gently brushed her ankles, thoroughly soaking her shoes and socks. As Zabers watched her, she was reminded of the ancient monks that she had read about in the school textbooks who walk across lava without being singed. There faces never falter even as they stepped on the immense heat of the lava. Zuxashi finally reached the other side and simply turned to face Zabers. Zabers stepped on the stones as she stared intensely at the counselor. Never taking her eyes off him, she stepped gingerly from one rock to another. Her hair whipped violently behind her as water splashed softly against her legs. As Zabers was about to step onto the next rock, a strong current swept against the stone, causing her foot to slip. She tried desperately to regain her balance but the current crashed against her legs and she toppled over. Her hands waved wildly in the air for a moment, searching for something to grab on to. Finding nothing, they sank heavily into the water. Zabers fought mightily against the current, trying not to be swept downstream. She took a deep breath, dived below surface, and swam back towards the others. When she finally reached land, she tiredly pulled herself onto the ground, gasping for breath. Slowly, she backed away from the water. Suddenly, a head emerged from the water and began to rise. The rest of the body showed itself as it followed the head's ascent. It looked as if the person was being pulled straight up from the water. Soon, the dirty feet of the person rested on the water's surface. Zabers stared aghast at the figure standing before them. The figured turned and looked directly at her. Zabers's hands flew to her mouth in horror as she realized who the person was. |
