MY STORY

Chapter Three

Daf, completely oblivious to what has just happened since he was trying to quell his bleeding nose, stared at the two girls. "What's the matter with you guys? You look like you have just seen a ghost. Are you all right? And more importantly, have you found the way back to camp yet?" He walked around the tree. "Hey, you guys found the rest of the trail, good job! Now let's get going before it gets dark."

Confused but too tired to think this out, Zabers signaled the others to continue on. Ten minutes later, they sighted their camp. Zabers and Daf, relief to see something familiar at last, raced to camp. Zuxashi stopped and stared at it for a moment, as if trying to see beyond it. Then, she walked slowly to camp to join the others.

The three gathered some wood for the fire. When they tried to build it the way they saw the counselor did, they found it to be more difficult than it seemed. After several vain attempts, Zabers kicked the wood in anger and disappointment.

"This is really bad. We don't know anything about surviv---" Daf stopped in mid-sentence and stared at something behind the camp. Zabers and Zuxashi both turned to see what he was looking at.

Behind them was a huge creature with shaggy, wet fur. Red coated its enormous claws and its razor-sharp teeth glistened in the moonlight. Globs of blood dripped out of its mouth. It towered over the three campers and let out a roar that echoed through the forest.

Daf lost control of his bladder. His knees melted to the ground. All he saw were those teeth glistening with blood.

"Playing dead won't work! Run!" screamed Zabers. The sound of her voice seemed to have awakened the creature. It pounced on Daf. Daf just stared at it with huge, watery eyes. Zabers and Zuxashi raced into the forest and kept on running.

After a while, Zabers realized that they were following the trail on the ground. When they reached the river, they stopped running and looked behind them. They saw only a forest full of shadows.

Slumping to the ground Zabers said, "I guess it's only the two of us left. We have to stick together and watch out for that thing. It looked like a bear, but it can't be...it was too big." She sighs. "Let's stick by the river, okay?" Zuxashi just smiled back at her. Zabers stared at Zuxashi.

Zabers was awakened by the glare of the sunlight. She saw Zuxashi walking back from the forest with something in her hands. It was a can that said Red Paint.

"Where did you get that? Did you find it in the forest?"

Zuxashi nodded.

Zabers went up to her with a puzzled look on her face. "Why did you bring that back?" she questioned.

She dipped the tip of her finger in the paint. "Wait, this isn't paint...it's blood."

"Where did you find it?!" asked Zabers sharply. "What the hell is wrong with you?!" She takes a step back. "Did you make it...?"

"Hello girls, how have you been?" said a familiar voice.
