The Greatest in My EyesThe Great of TennisTennis is a sport where champions are made. Perhaps in many eyes, even mine, the all time great is non other then "Pistol" Pete Sampras. His style of play is very different from other all of the pro tennis players today. He has an extreme western forhand grip and the ultimate textbook volley. Also, we can't forget his racquet. As described in the tennis page, it's the St Vincent version of the Wilson Pro Staff 6.0. He used this racquet, which was only made for about three years in the 80's, for his whole career. And now right when Wilson makes a racquet that mimics his racquet, he is 90% sure that he is going to retire. It would have been sweet if we all could have seen him play with that racquet. ![]() King of ClayMany may argue that the French open, which is a clay court event, is the hardest of all of the majors. Only a select few can win this title, but one Brazilian man joins some of the greats who won three French Open titles, Gustavo Kuerten. His first French Open back in 1997, he won the title as an unseeded player. There he shows signs of promise that one day he will become one of the greats. Later on in 2000 and 2001, he won to back to back French Open titles. Along the way, he had the number one ranking for one year and also won the Masters title in 2000. For this, he was nicknamed the King of Clay. ![]() Honorable MentionThis year, one man rose from all of his expectations and won the biggest tournament of all of tennis. Roger Ferderer this year won Wimbledon. He was expected to win after he beat the 7-time champion Pete Sampras in 2001. after that, he was expected to become the next Pistol Pete. It took him a while but he did it, with fashion. During the tournament, he only lost one set and took out contender after contender. I think he will be the one to beat for the next year. ![]() | |
