The world of the struggling Science Fiction Writer is a cold, hard place. I once heard it described as standing outside in a blizzard staring through a window at a fabulous party going on in front of a roaring fire and wishing you could be in there.
Take heart! There's hope!
Short fiction is a great way to learn the craft, break into the field, and make a name for yourself. The whole thing can seem pretty confusing just starting out. Writers' magazines and how-to books often given conflicting information. If you want a clear idea of what is and isn't considered professional behavior or standards in the modern publishing world, along with links to markets currently buying Science Fiction and Fantasy, check out the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, an organization made up of professional writers in the genre.
