| Omega-3 These are long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA's). They are "good" fats. The major components are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), and DPA (docosapentaenoic acid), all of which are found naturally in the human body at birth, but can't reproduce nor store internally. Omega-3 must be obtained from external sources. A shortage of omega-3 reduces the cells ability to perform their function leading to nutrient starvation and chronic and debilitating diseases. Omega-6 Also PUFA's same as omega-3, both are among the 49 known essential nutrients that our bodies need daily. It has now been found that an excess of omega-6 interferes with the benefits of omega-3, making existing omega-3 shortages more acute. The more omega-6, the stronger the tendency for the blood platelets to clot. This lays the basis for thrombosis, and to some extent for atherosclerosis (plague deposit in arteries). The recommended ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 is 5 : 1. Arachidonic acid (AA) It is "bad" omega-6, under biological conversion in our body, produced from the intakes of vegetable oils, animal meat, eggs, and milk. It will in term convert to "bad" eicosanoids, PGE2 prostaglandins. Prostaglandins PGE1, PGE2, PGE3 These are critical hormone-like chemical, eicosanoids. They are also converted from omega-3 and omega-6. PGE1 comes from vegetable source linoleic acid. PGE2 comes from arachidonic acid (AA) as described above. PGE3 comes from plant source alpha-linolenic acids and marine or fish sources omega-3 EPA. In general, PGE1 and PGE3 are "good" eicosanoids. PGE2 is the "bad guy". |
