A famous Cuban poet, Ursula was born in an estate
close to Bayamo in 1832, and she died in Santa Isabel de Las
Lajas, Cienfuegos, in 1874. She sometimes used the
pseudonym, La Serrana. She was the sister of Jos� Mar�a
C�spedes y Orellano, a "jurisconsulto" and she
collaborated with her great grandmother, Antonia, on her
poetry and in various newspapers in Cuba and Mexico and also
in La Moda Elegante de C�diz. Her first book,
titled Ecos de las Selvas (Bayamo, 1860), included a foreword
by Carlos Manuel de C�spedes. This was followed by El
Cementerio de La Habana (Habana, 1863), both of which
earned her a great literary reputation.
Her
parents were Don Manuel C�spedes y Barrero and Do�a Barbara
Orellano de C�spedes.
