| In June of 1792, a petition to operate a ferry on the Connecticut River, between Dalton, New Hampshire and Lunenburg, Vermont, was granted to Dalton's first settler, Moses Blake. With the exception of thirteen years in the mid 1800's, the ferry carried passengers, horses and wagons, and finally cars until 1927, when a steel bridge was finally built about three miles downriver. For those thirteen years, a private toll bridge was used, until a spring flood destroyed it. The ferry itself was probably rebuilt more than once, and was operated by several different people through the years. Nothing remains on the site, although on the Vermont side of the river, one can see the old road that leads away from the water's edge. |
