84-Peter HUMRICHOUSE, b. 10 Oct 1753, d. 13 Feb 1837, age 84, Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD, s/o John and Barbara HUMRICHOUSE,  m. 20 Feb 1777, Philadelphia, PA,  witnessed by Michael Tatler, in Springfield Twp., Philadelphia Co., (85) Mary Margaret HANDELMAN?, b. 1756, d. 7 Oct 1839, Hagerstown, d/o _____ &  Mary Margaret (MILLER) HANDLEMAN?. Peter grew up in York Co., PA, moved to Germantown, Philadelphia Co., PA. He enlisted on May 1776 as a private in the army , into a private company formed in Philadelphia under the command of Capt. Thomas Dunking. He was commissioned an Ensign on Jul 1776, and was Lieutenant in the retreat from Ft. Lee. He was present at the Battle of Trenton and was appointed Officer of the Day by Wshington. After Trenton, his term of service expired and he returned to Germantown and married. In Sep 1877 he enlisted in the 2nd. Battalion of Philadelphia. He fought in the Battle of Germantown on 4 Oct 1777. In 1881 he was ordered to take powder to Yorktown and Fredericksburg, VA. He served until the end of the war, when he returned to Germantown and lived there until 1798. When a yellow fever epidemic broke out in Philadelphia, he moved his family to Hagerstown, and established a coach making business on North Potomac Street near the Reformed Church. He received a patent of land at Coshocton Co., OH, which he gave to his son Peter Jr. From 1805 to 1816 he is listed as a blacksmith in Hagerstown. At one time he or his son, Peter, served on a committee to exaine the organization of the Hagerstown, Fire Company. His will was written 28 Aug 1833, and probated on 6 Mar 1837.  A codicil to the will stated the son Charles was to receive no amount of the estate. He was admitted to the Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD Bar on 22 Mar 1865. He was an attorney and director of the Western Maryland Railroad, and appointed school commissioner in Washington Co. in 1884.He was president of the Hagerstown Ice Company. He was a candidate for the MD House of Delegates, but didn't wind. He was president of one of the original members of the Conococheague Club.He was a director and attorney for the Hagerstown Bank. They le left Hagerstown, MD, in 1814, settled at Brownville, Pa, then removed to Coshocton Co., OH, in 1832 or 1834. His wife, Sarah SHUMAN was probably from Hagerstown, MD. He came to Coshocton Co., in 1834 at the same time as his parents. He was admitted to the bar in 1832, probably in PA, and in Coshocton Co., OH in Nov 1832 or 1834. He was elected Secretary of Coshoction Co. Agricultural Society in 1835. He was appointed Prosecuting Attorney filling the post of his friend, G. W. Sullivan, in 1841. He was a witness to a number of wills of residents of Coshocton from 1840 to 1851. He was appointed to the school commission, and in 1849, school examiner. His brother read law with him in 1853. After being disabled in an accident. he turned to the nursery business, and raising sheep and cattle. He established his orchard located on Mill Creek. He was postmaster for over 15 years. He was director with the Steubenville and Indiana Railroad. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, where he was superintendent of the Sunday School and a congregational singer. William K. along with his brother-in-law, T. S. HUMRICHOUSE, and G. W. 84.8-Christian Frederick HUMRICHOUSE, b. 29 Jun 1791, d. 5 Oct 1876, Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD, m. 17 Nov 1814, Washington Co., Hannah HARRY, b. 24 Jun 1797, d/o Jacob HARRY, d. 25 Apr 1880. He was a private in the Hagerstown Vol, Militia in the War of 1812. Christian was an early director of the Hagerstown Bank and was a condidate for postmaster in Hagerstown, but was not appointed. He served in the Maryland Legislature, in1833. He is reported to have been whipped by J. Hager*, founder of Hagerstown at Marsh Run on Williamsport Pike, who then give him a dollar. It was to remind him where the town limits extended due to Indian trouble. In 1805 to 1815, he is listed as blacksmith living in Hagerstown *Note: the compiler is not sure of the validity of this story; it quite possibly was J. Hager, but not the founder, and by 1790, there was little or no trouble from Indians in this area of Maryland. in 1855, he attended a meeting to send delegates to Washington, DC, on 8 Jan 1855 to take action regarding land warrants for veterans of the War of 1812. In 1860, he as living in Hagerstown, and in 1870 he is listed as a silver plater living nr. Hagrestown. They are buried in Zion Reformed Cem., Hagerstown. He was vice-resident of the Hagerstown Spoke and Bending Company and director of the Hagerstown Manufacture, Mining and Land Improvement Company. He was Justice of the Peace for 4 years., and treasurer of St. Paul's Methodist Episcopaly chruch. He was member of the Knights of Pythias, the AOUW, and the FMC. He was a veteran of the Mexican War, then migrated west to IL, and probably died there. He evidently abandoned his family when he went to IL, and maybe for that reason, his father, Peter, wrote a codicil to his will, demanding that he receive no part of the estate. As a young man he was messenger on horseback, carrying newspapers to subscribers over a route that extended miles from Hagerstown, Washington Co. Charles W. was educated at Frederick Academy, left school at age 13 to work on "Mail", a Hagerstown, MD, newspaper and carried mail for his uncle Albert HUMRICHOUSE between Hagerstown and Shepherdstown, VA. At age 21, he moved to Baltimore where he was employed by the Sun Paper. Engaged in the retail grocery business on Commerce Street until 1879. In 1860 he was merchant living in the 3rd. Ward, Hagerstown, Washington Co., with Henry Smith 30, a black servant, and Margaret HUMRICHOUSE age 5 in the household. In 1870, they were living with William and Leah HAWKEN near Williamsport. Charles was described as a retail merchant. In 1880, he was retired merchant in the 2nd. Dist., Washington Co., which must have been the home farm, Springfield, once owned by Gen. Otho Holland Williams. Mary's parents, the HAWKENS were living with him as was a servant Laura Kefner 28. He was a director of the Western  Maryland Railroad, until his death.. He was first president of the Washington County Agriculture and Mechanical Association, director of the Hagerstown Steam Engine and Machine Co., president and one of the original founders of Washington County Orphan's Home, and a director of Lutz Orphan's Home in Frederick Co., MD, and Trustee of PA College in Gettysburg. He was elected president of the Hagerstown Fair Association, and one of the incorporators of the Hagerstown Water Company. They were members of the Zion Lutheran Church in Williamsport. His early education was in Williamsport, spent 3 years at St. James College in Washington Co., and graduated from Dickinson College, Carlisle, Cumberland Co., PA in 1866. He studied law at Cambridge, Dorchester Co., MD, completing his studies with Judge R. H. Alvey in Hagerstown, and was admitted to the bar in Aug 1868. He formed a law practice with Judge Daniel Weisel, retired from the practice and joined the firm of L. E. and F. F. MCCOMAS. IN 1870 they were living in Hagerstown. William HUMRICHOUSE 30, his brother-in-law was living with them, along with  Charles 40, and Hettie  30 Brison, black servants, and Alice Keyes 21, aslo a black servant. He was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court of Washington, DC. In 1876, he was defeated in his race for Congress. In 1882 he was nominated by the Republican Party to succeed Milton G. Urman of Frederick Co., MD, in Congress, where her served until 1890 (See Congressional Biography and enter the name MCCOMAS in the search).He was delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1892, 1900, and 1904, and in 1892 was ssecretary of the Republican National Committee. He was appointed by President Harding to the Supreme Court of DC, until he succeeded Arthur P. Gorman on 4 Mar 1899 in the U.S. Senate. He served as a professor of international law in the Law School at Georgetown University and was a trustee of Dickinson College beginning in 1875. In 1899 he received a LL. D. degree from Dickinson College. He was appointed by President Roosevelt as one of the Associate Justices of the Court of Appeals of DC on 1 Jul 1905. They are buried in Rose Hill Cem., Hagerstown.
