EMPOWERMENT |
Masizame Weavers was formed in April 1999 as part of Dakawa Centre's Business Empowerment programme. All five members of the business are women of Grahamstown, South Africa. The group is committed to working together and to developing their weaving skills. The business works on small commissioned orders and larger corporate orders. Some of the products that Masizame Weavers produce on frame and floor loom are: Mohair and spun wool blankets, throws and scarves; undyed cotton rugs; grass and acrylic placemats and hammocks; hemp bags and mats; and felt bowls. Another main business objective is to provide training for emergent weavers and to participate in the provincial initiatives to create job opportunities for unemployed people. Masizame Weavers have already taught frame weaving, knitting, spinning and dying to emergent weaving groups and they have also been involved in the development of hemp products for the Centre for Scientific Industrial Research. Masizame Weavers: Chairperson Nomakhosazana Nyenge, Treasurer Laura Zumani, Secretary Xoliswa Konze, Administrator Nomachina Jali-Mahapi, Director of Marketing Naomi Swartz.
