| Juneau, AK If you have a teenager with you on your move to Juneau, please contact Family Resource Specialist Betsy Longenbaugh, and we will welcome the teen through the Teen Sponsor Program. What is the Juneau Teen Sponsor Program? The Teen Sponsor Program is an informal way to welcome teenagers who are moving to Juneau with a Coast Guard parent. Why does it exist? Teens may have the toughest transition when a family moves to a new community. Friendships are very important to teenagers, and leaving them can be devastating. The Teen Sponsor Program reminds teens that they will be able to make new friends in the community and may help them establish friendships before the first day of school. How does it work? Teens already living in Juneau "sponsor" the incoming teens through: * Mailing a welcome packet and personal note. * E-mailing the new teen and sharing his or her e-mail address with incoming teens. * Personally welcoming the teen in the community once he or she arrives. What do we do once the teens arrive in Juneau? We have walking tours of downtown to familiarize teens with downtown and with the high school. Other summer activities may include: * Bowling. * Hamburger cookout. * Kayaking. * Hiking. * Watching a movie at a member's home What's in the welcome package sent to my teen? * A personal note from a teenager welcoming him or her to the community. * A high school handbook. * Local map. * Parks and recreation schedule. * Bus schedule. * Names and e-mail addresses of all teen sponsors.
