About CzechEd

What is CzechEd?

CzechEd is an open, unmoderated mailing list for the discussion of Czech-English and English-Czech terminology, definitions, translations and related questions. It is run on the eGroups system, and is NOT a commercial service - we're here to help each other out.

CzechEd is intended as a calm corner of the Internet for people to go to when they are stuck for understanding, for a definition or for a phrase, and the dictionaries and reference books can't help. It is a practical forum rather than a chat or "issues" list, but we are a 'community', so informality and humour are welcome.

Who is CzechEd for?

CzechEd is primarily aimed at professional translators and interpreters, but welcomes anyone with a genuine interest in the Czech and English languages - there are no restrictions on membership, and current members include, for example, language students of various levels and teachers. Nor is location a barrier - we currently have members in the Czech Republic, Germany, France, the Netherlands the UK, Ireland, Canada and various parts of the USA.

As with any mailing list, we have some members who post regularly, some who post occasionally, and some who never post at all. Messages sent to the list may be in either Czech or English.

What resources does CzechEd have?

For a start, these pages! Here you will find the web's largest collection of links to specialist Czech monolingual and translation glossaries, a small number of Slovak monolingual and translation glossaries, and downloadable resources made available by our members. If you'd like to get a feel for who our members are, we have links to their homepages; we also have a list of links to related mailing lists.

The biggest resource that CzechEd has, however, is the knowledge and experience of its members, who have worked in a wide variety of different fields.

So how do I subscribe?

CzechEd is run using the eGroups system - just enter your e-mail address below to subscribe!

Powered by www.egroups.com

Alternatively, if you are a registered eGroups user, you can add CzechEd to your MyGroups page in the normal way by going to the list page here.

A third option for subscribing is to send a blank e-mail message (no subject, no text) to [email protected]

Finally, if none of the above works, you can send a request to join the list to its administrator, Alastair Millar, at [email protected]

I'm still not sure... I have some more questions I'd like to ask before deciding whether or not I want to join

Fair enough! You are more than welcome to send them here to the list administrator.
