       ‘ARROGANCE AND DEMOCRACY’

               2003-02-24

It had taken thousands of years to reach and get through to the level of democracy in 21st century. That was a hard achievement sacrificed by scholars, writers, politicians and of course ordinary people

who have seen in democracy a very important sense of liberty,

freedom and social justice. Democracy, it’s a very popular and

significant dimension of our daily life, but from the time

when politicians have decided to stop and fight with terrorism, the situation has dramatically changed. Politicians so called, democratically elected by majority of citizens to represent them in

a Parliament start to change the law by taking away our rights to freedom and liberty. What is worse, that they start ignoring our rights to remind them what we are expecting from them. The last

demonstrations around Australia has shown how politicians, particularly Prime Minister John Howard, has the lack of understanding what citizens think about politics and how they are

alienating and keeping apart from us, because of their involvement in dirty practice not to listen to peoples’ concerns.  Simply that situation is taking us to a new dimension of

demeaning of our political life, where foolishness, arrogance and lack of commonsense are the most favourite attitude of politicians mind. The latest behaviour of the Prime Minister accusing

Australian citizens who have taken part in anti-war rally, that they are comforting and protecting Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was not only the typical example of arrogance but

disgrace. Mr Howard doesn’t understand or pretend that he doesn’t know, why the people went on the street to manifest their view about Australian’s involvement in war with Iraq. That is nothing

new in the conduct of our Prime Minister, who always knows everything better than ordinary citizens. He said that he doesn’t believe in public opinion and he will decide on war on Iraq in a

right time. Listening to what the Federal Government says and does about Iraq, that means that John Howard has clearly committed himself to war but he likes telling Australian people

otherwise. Arrogance and misleading citizens by politicians should change and go in the direction to respect public opinion. A lot of people have different view and because of disagreement

between Government and citizens in judgment of situation, in this case, about war with Iraq, nobody has the right to abuse each other. The Government has no right to ignore that, because in the

end Australian people will pay for the decision done by the Government, not the Prime Minister and Liberal Party. That’s our money and we should as citizens decide, where our tax-money, the

Government should be putting. I don’t think this place is a war on Iraq. We have a more important domain in our community, where our money could be spent better and more efficiently for the best interest of our citizens.
