ANTITERRORISTIC LAW2002-05-15 After September 11 and global fight with terrorism calledby USA, Australian Government decided to change the law,
which would help fight with this matter better and more efficient.
Normally all people should agree with that. But of course there is something which make us nervous
and cautious about the changes in that law. We have to be very wary if we are talking about giving tremendous power to some group of people. We have to understand very clearly what kind of power is involved and precisely what kind of protection do
citizens have from abuse that power. The most important things
about such a matter are whether our rights in a democratic
society are protected or not. The new law simply want from us to
prove our innocence. How can we exactly verify that and
provide any evidence if we will be locked up without any contact
with lawyers and the outside world. They want to have the right to
dissolve any organization and arrest their leaders without
justification. That’s giving them power against opposition for keeping
control in Parliament forever. Look for example in Malaysia or
Burma. What kind of protection will we be having if special forces or police abuse the power? Will they be
accountable and prosecuted if they are guilty of breaking the law? What
about the politicians who wants to give them that power with
plenty loopholes and gaps without responsibility and
accountability. Politicians are forgetting about our democratic rights. These days they are not showing remorse for democracy. We can say that democracy in Australia starting to go backwards, only politician’s rights and privileges are
growing and they want more power than ordinary citizen have. This is a very disturbing and dangerous situation that
under cover of fighting with terrorism, they want to terrorise
citizens and organizations, which think differently than official
structure of existing establishment. They want to liquidate the
freedom of speech. We shouldn’t and we can’t allow the government and
politicians to take our democracy to totalitarian society. That’s
why we should very strongly tell our members of parliament that their
job is to protect and represent us by listening to what we have to say and
what kind of future we would like to see for our country. Ignorance lately is very popular in political section of our life. We have to stop that before politicians do too much damage to our way of life, which we use to call – freedom. If you think that new changes in the law don’t relate to
you, don’t be surprise? We are talking here about our rights
to be treated fairly with dignity and respect by law and people
representing this law. Everyone should have the opportunity to be treated
justly and equally. Because equality of rights in Australia means that
nobody is above the law, that’s referring not only to ordinary citizens
but also politicians, particularly members of parliament and the Government. Back to home page |
