Science and the Mystical

There have been countless articles on how Quantum Mechanics and other variations on 20th century science harmonize with the teachings of the ancients. I'll admit that I've thought about it often enough. As a teenager, I even made a chart associating the four primal forces with the elements... let me see if I remember...

  • Air: Electromagnetism
  • Earth: Gravity
  • Water: Strong Nuclear Force
  • Fire: Weak Nuclear Force
  • Of course, the elusive Unified Field was Spirit
It's funny how it all feels so juvenile now... but lately the thoughts have bubbled up again. For example, alcohol is Fire of Water and Wood is Water of Earth. It's like a grand Enochian tablet slowly revealing itself, consuming the Periodical Table that I once knew. Heh, perhaps Electromagnetism will become the Great Watchtower of Air.

One thing has certainly come to mind though. The endless dichotomies of science and religion. Holistic vs. Western medicine. Tantric sacred sexuality vs. Christian celebacy. Buddhist solemnity vs. Dionysian ecstasy. Quantum mechanics vs. Newtonian Materialism. The funny thing is... they all work.

This is the Information Age and I've come to realize that it always has been. DNA is the book the body reads to build itself. Consciousness is energy that pours itself through the matrix of brain and personality. Protons and electrons combine in different orders to manifest as different forms of matter. Hammer metal one way and you get a sword, hammer it another and you get junk. Like wandering through a jungle of concepts, looking for that magical combination that offers meaning.

It's funny, even now, as I type, the ideas flow. Imagine having a door that leads to a room filled with an infinite number of building blocks of innumerable sizes, shapes and colours; that door is your mind. Sometimes, when I look at a sentence, I don't see a sentence, I see a jumble of concepts pieced together, like blocks, to produce something new. Every sentence, every technique, every picture, emotion and object is a jumble of blocks from this omnipresent room. Can we sense these 'blocks' before we piece them together? When next we look at a plane or castle, can we see the blocks or concepts that allow it to exist?

Everything is information. Perhaps magic is nothing more than mixing the concepts around to come up with something new... whether you creatively visualize, pray to a deity or perform a grand ritual, how you mix them is merely a matter of style.

Speaking of mixtures of concepts, perhaps this little train of thought was a glimpse into Yesod...
