Wrestling
It had been four years since wrestling was offered as a sport at Custer High School, and the young men and young women who came out this year made it a year to remember. What started off as a tough year, ended in unexpected success, and has left the Cougars with what might be the best young team in the state.
Having to practice at another high school and wear another team's uniforms would have made many kinds think about doing something else with their winter. Especially when those kids find out just how tough and physical wrestling is. The group here at Custer decided to gut it out, and what a season they had. |
The tean won its first five dual meets, and finished with an 11 - 7 record. They won the Ruffing Division Conference Championship by out scoring their opponents 302 - 9. They took first place at the Rufus King Invitational, and placed a surprising third place at the Conference Tournament. All great accomplishments, but your Cougars weren't done there.
They qualified 12 wrestlers to the WIAA Sectional, which was a Milwaukee City Conference record. Of those wrestlers, there were no Seniors, meaning the future is shining brightly for the wrestling team at Custer High School. Next season will be 14 letterwinners return, including team MVP Juan Perez, and the Team's Most Improved Wrestler Marvel Taylor.

Fund Raiser
Over the Summer Custer's Wrestling team has been busy! Coach Tomes brought a group of Custer's wrestlers down to the Greek Fest ground to do a little clean up work. The work was for the neighborhood, where the people living nearby the Festival ground had complained in the passed about trash problems.
Coach Tomes said that the money they are getting paid to do this will help pay for the extra expenses that the team has to conduct this year; Knee pads, Head gear, etc.
|
The Cougar has even gotten some publicity while doing this fund raiser. Channel 12 (WISN) News had stopped over to interveiw Coach Tomes and a few other wrestlers such as George Ewing and Teela Jeanes. Coach was able to have more wrestler come out the following days to pick up the trash, even the final day where it had rained and poured.
