Cougars lose to Bulldogs Cougars lose the Playoffs

The Milwaukee Custer High School football team saw enough of Richard Grows Tuesday night to last well into next season.

Making up for a slow start by his Cedarburg team, Grows rushed for 213 yards and five consecutive touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs to a convincing 47-3 rout of Custer in a Division 2 state playoff opener at Custer.

Although the final score was all Cedarburg, it was Custer that dominated play early on.

Behind the running of tailback C.J. Davis and the playmaking of quarterback Julius Davis, the Cougars found their way inside the
Cedarburg 10-yard line twice in the first quarter.

Cedarburg's defense rose to the occasion both times, however, and Custer came away with only a 24-yard field goal from Davis early in the second quarter.

Custer's proficiency on offense also kept the Bulldogs' offense on the sideline. Cedarburg ran only three plays for 5 yards the entire first quarter.

"When you have two teams that aren't really familiar with each other, there's always going to be that feeling-out process early on," Custer coach Barry Zmudzinski said. "We had our opportunities and we had a chance to go up, 14-0, but we had some matchup problems at the line. That was the name of the game right there."

Facing a 3-0 deficit heading into the second quarter, the Bulldogs rolled up their sleeves and went to work.

It was on the legs of Grows that Cedarburg finally began to move on offense.

Grows capped a pair of lengthy drives in the quarter with touchdown runs of 3 and 20 yards. After Cedarburg's defense stuffed Custer for the third time in the quarter, Grows then weaved his way on a 62-yard touchdown near the end of the half to put Cedarburg in command, 24-3.

It was more of the same in the second half.

Grows scored on runs of 9 and 25 yards in the third quarter. And then, his younger brother Ben scored from 36 yards out in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring for Cedarburg.

Cedarburg (7-3) finished with 363 yards in 44 carries. C.J. Davis led Custer (7-3) with 77 yards in nine carries, including a 55-yard run in the first quarter.

"Our kids just weren't ready to play (in the first half). You could see that they weren't ready to go at 4 p.m.," Cedarburg coach Brian Leair said. "But Grows has been consistent all year.

"I think some of the players were wide-eyed a bit when we were down, 3-0, but Grows is so even-keeled. He got stronger as the game wore on and that's what he's been doing all year for us."
