From Darren O'Riley: It's with more than a touch of embarrassment that I admit that some names have slipped my mind over these five years; For that, I apologize. However, know that while the human memory can be flawed, none can take from you the special touch you put upon Crystal Shores, for all involved at any point left their mark. Without the participation we've had, without your time and efforts, Crystal Shores would've been "just another rpg game" in "just another chatroom" on "some server somewhere" with "those people." That was never the case. Many staff have come and gone; I admittedly am not the easiest person to work with, and especially, work -for-. I was a stickler for detail, I wanted things a certain way or no way at all, and while it's generally appreciated by all involved, the difficult moments were necessary evils and experience was learnt for all parties concerned. Early-Day Names like Marcus and Corinne, Sahyber and Torlin, Teiyah and Carol, Kim and Dave, and the list could go on for many a page, might not ring any bells or register with you upon first glance. But for me, to look at these names, brings back, in this order: The Creation of Old Achethe. The authorship of the Story of the Gods and the first rough outlines of the Isle's Races. The earliest stages of Development of Guilds and Shops. The first considerations and lively debates of adding more aspects from pen-and-paper games to translate online...or not. Seeing eye-to-eye on everything never happened, thank the Gods. Had that been the case, this would have been a game that dropped to the Wayside early on, and would've been long-forgotten. Names like Jane Maichen, Rosalyn, Kevorin, Boss Kuno, Khalidan, Neo are just a smattering of those who were there in the early days and continued with us. Never can enough be said or enough gratitude expressed about the virtue of loyalty from staff and players. There are new staffers currently intermingled with the old, and there's no doubt that they will continue to contribute to the vitality of the place, as did their predecessors. We learned from the mistakes of others in other gaming places, be it those who abused the power and trust given them by their players, or those who failed to live up to our expectations. We have never been shy about knowing what we wanted, and going after it, doing whatever it took to attain it. Many hours were spent, much sweat poured into it, and our gambles paid off. Crystal Shores' shops were constructed boldly; the original goal was to have one hundred in operation. We met that goal by a deadline, and it was something that online gaming hadn't seen. The next thing I new? We were being blatantly ripped off by another game, whose owner lurked our site and mined our pages. They say imitation is the best form of flattery...but shameless rip-off is another story altogether. (Yes, I exploded; yes, I made another game owner cry.) Yet another moment in the life of a Crystal Shores GM, complete with Maalox and Scotch. There were many moments like this, and perhaps I've got a little more Carazzi in me than I care to admit, because in looking back, I didn't so much mind having targets for my aggression. I didn't pick them at random; they begged for it by trying to steal from me and mine.
I began to understand why Islamic nations cut off thieves' hands. Had we done that, there would be a lot of one-handed, one-stumped typists in the world today. Yet...even THESE people deserve a credit. Why? Because they forced us to continue to strive for the best. We were not allowed to sit back and relax, not when there was something better we were capable of creating. If we kept working with quality, if we kept acting on our ideas as they happened, then it went without saying that we'd always be one step ahead. And we were. Without the constant challenges we faced, human nature dictates we would've gotten lazy and content. We weren't allowed to, and for that, I am now grateful. |
The players past and present made and continue to make it a lively place. Storylines appeared out of nowhere with storytelling finesse unlike anything I'd seen in the online arenas. They were accessible to all, but believable at the same time, while suspending general disbelief. (Of course, we weren't 'really' in the days of Old; of course, we weren't 'really' on the Isle. But that aside...if we -were-, we could very well have been living what unfolded before our eyes.)There were too many storylines to consider when writing the Credits page, but know that many still live on in our hearts and memories. Groundwork was laid then that continues to resound now. If you don't believe me, fact-check this Tribute site against New Achethe. I didn't write this singlehandedly. Whether or not you realize it, you assisted. Other credits go to people and places like Effie Rover's RPG Gateway. That place pitted us against another game, once, who tried to stack their voting and push us down the list. It was petty, childish, and stupid...yet it did cause my legendary temper to flare when I saw us getting knocked down through the cheating of others. Without a word from me, the RPG Gateway site got wise to what was going on, and fixed the problem. That was professionalism and I belatedly give a nod of appreciation for that. The free websites and webtools we've used made getting things out of our heads and onto the internet possible. When this began, I resolved not to pump a penny into it unless I absolutely had to. (A malfunctioning character generator and some inferior webpage hosting did separate this fool from his money, once, which made me gunshy as to ever do it again.) But more scripts, counters, images....yes, some of the better things in life are free, and I thank the hosts and authors of those tools for making them so widely available. Bjorn Lynne deserves a special thank-you. While some complained about the music that filled the pages of the original Crystal Shores website, many others were as swept away in it as I was. We were granted legal rights to use the music, and those rights are still within our hold. It was as if Mr. Lynne had an insight to the Isle (he didn't) and maybe, somewhere in his mind, knew what we wanted. (He didn't, but it is a strange coincidence how perfectly his music partnered with our stories.) Thank you, Mr. Lynne, for allowing us rights to your outstanding works. ImageNETion.com and other sites with art, from clip art to fantasy art, rounds out our thank-you's; Imagery that lives in our heads needed to be exorcised from our lone minds and shared with our masses, and places were available for us to go, dip our bucket in their well, and come back with something to share. We strived to ensure proper credits were given when due, and also took the extra step to only use things that were under public domain. Yet, as always, if something is spotted that you hold the copyright to, kindly contact us so we can correct our oversight and credit you accordingly.
Lastly, I would like to give an overdue thanks to my family. They have gone many hours with me mentally absent as I was physically here, but unavailable, because I was 'on Crystal Shores.' Many a dinner has gone cold, many an occasion has had me arriving a bit more than 'fashionably late' because I had to crack open the File Manager and add "one more detail," or update "Just one more player sheet", or host "one more quest." I thank my family for indulging my passion for this, and not using it as grounds for divorce....Yet, anyway. --Darren O'Riley, October 2, 2005. |
