Cetacean Research Unit (Gibraltar).
The CRU was formed in 2001 and is a small non-profit making charity working at the entrance to the Mediterranean, in the Bay of Gibraltar. The dolphins that visit the bay form an integral part of the natural heritage of this area. The short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) and the striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) are the species involved in our research.
Striped Dolphins surfacing.
The data yielded by our studies, will hopefully add greatly to our knowledge of the distribution, ecology and dynamics of these dolphin populations using the Bay of Gibraltar. Perhaps most importantly, the information provided by our studies will be helpful in the formulation of effective conservation policies and management proposals to protect these animals and the marine environment in this area of the Mediterranean Sea.
