Pet Overpopulation Facts

* Every hour 415 children are born in the USA, and every hour, 3,500 cats are also born.

* One female cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 cats in 7 years. 10 million in 10 years!!!!!!!!

* One female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in 6 years.

* It is estimated that 10- 20 million animals are euthanized every year. This doesn't include strays or those who die in the streets.

* Every 1.5 seconds a shelter animal is killed.

* Only 1 animal out of every 10 born in USA gets a good home.

* Only 2- 3 % of shelter cats are ever claimed by their owners due to lack of ID.

* A study of relinquished dogs and cats in 12 US animal shelters showed 30% of the surrendered dogs were purebreds.

* In the same study - 55% of surrendered dogs and 47% of surrendered cats were unaltered.

* One of the top ten reasons people relinquish their cats and dogs to shelters is "no homes for litter mates".

* Over 56% of puppies and dogs that enter shelters are killed.

* Approximately 71% of cats and kittens entering shelters are killed.

* The estimated yearly cost to taxpayers to round up, house, kill and dispose of homeless animals is 2 BILLION dollars, or between $30.00-$70.00 PER ANIMAL!

* There is much greater incidence of biting in unsterilized animals. Of nearly the nearly 20 fatalities caused by dog attacks investigated between 1992 -1994, NONE was caused by a spayed or neutered dog.

* Spaying a female eliminates the possibility of uterine and ovarian cancer, and greatly reduces the chances of breat cancer. Neutering a male reduces both the risk of prostrate enlargement and prostrate cancer.
