| THE EMMICK-AMICK FAMILY | |||||||||||||
| Henry Emmick, notorious Virginia bushwhacker of the Civil War, moved to Bronson, Floyd, near Souix City, Iowa, about 1878-1880. His daughter, Mary, married Charlie Sluyter and lived in nearby Salix. His son, Jacob, followed his dad to the ranch, to help the family settle, and soon moved to Souix City. Edd was born December 25, 1884, and Maude was born July 31, 1886. |

| Later Jacob bought land on the Summer Hill Estate, Pomonkey River, Virginia and started a farm with Aunt Carrie and John Lee. It wasn't long though, and he was back in Souix City, Henry had entered into a partnership with sons Jacob and George, and with Cousin Charlie Amick.
Edd and Maude soon followed on the train to Mullen. After looking the land over, Henry started a ranch sixty miles away. The family lived in a one room sod house, and Jacob trapped racoons and coyotes for rugs and robes. |

| The family fought prairie fires, blizzards, cattle thieves, and cattle disease for a year and went broke. Jacob with a team of horses, a wagon, a few sticks of furniture, some chickens and a cow, moved to Woodlake, Cherry County. | |||||||||||||
