OUTLAW TRAIL
Henry (Amick) Emmick, notorious Virginia bushwhacker of the Civil War, moved to Bronson, Woodbury County, near Souix City, Iowa, after the war.

The Niobrara River was cleared of Souix by General Crook, and now horse thieves, rustlers, and whiskey runners, looking to sneak into the newly created Rosebud Reservation near the Black Hills, flooded into the area.  Henry had professional skills in these enterprises he perfected during the war against Yankee General Crook in west Virginia.

The route became known as the "Outlaw Trail", and Fort Niobrara, near Valentine, was etablished to bring law and order to this wild area.

Henry had entered into a partnership with sons Jacob and George, and with Cousin Charlie Amick. After Gettysburg, Jefferson Ayers, Martin Sheppard and Henry Amick left the Night Hawks and joined the 51st Virginia to Knoxville. And later raided towards Kentucky with General John Hunt Morgan, and after Cythiana fled to be with Magruders Guerrillas near Emmicks Landing, Hancock County.  The Partnership had moved from old Virginia to Kentucky.  Jacob Emmick came down with the measles, then small pox in 1865, and his dad Henry travelled throughout war-torn Kentucky with his "Partners".

After the war, Henry Amick left Kentucky to live across the river in Indiana and changed his last name to "Emmick".  He then moved to Bronson, Iowa, and then to Virginia Settlement at Dry Valley, not far from Mullen, Nebraska.  Our friends and inlaws the Ayers, Shepherd, and Coulter families had also moved there, and some said they were bad men.

The Emmick family later started a ranch near Woodlake, Cherry County, southeast of Ft. Niobrara.
