"To thine own self be true." -unknown
This will always be one of my favorite sayings. It fits in quite nicely with Covenant CommUnity Center's aim of puttung the unity back in community.
No one can help others who have lost touch with their true selves. We've all felt, at one time or another, that someone was acting "phony" in some manner. Were they speaking on false pretenses? Perhaps showing off? Possibly being extremely critical of someone else? What's being observed is that these people are off-center; they are not expressing from the true selves, but from the ego. The ego is inherently separate and self-serving. Thus these people find themselves in a hostile state to the needs of others.
Self-observation would go far to alleviate this problem--all too often people "didn't mean to" or "didn't realize" what they said or did to others or how it was interpreted by others. The other party's best interests weren't exactly at the top of their priorities. Most importantly though they weren't being true to themselves.
From now on, let's all try to observe what we're doing and our intentions for doing it. This will facilitate more unity in any community. |
