"We enter a warm, dimly lit room, still showing signs of its former life as a carriage house...getting a look see at last is a real treat...I find myself admiring Michael Poletti...I find his conversation, his enthusiasm for wine and food rather winning. The Country Squire menu is an interresting one...perhaps because the dishes are so far removed from the trendy and usual that they acquire renewed appeal...Poletti takes pride in offering a variety of wines, his list is well considered and studded with a number of fine names...Poletti does an admirable job. Here in Killingworth, the rugged creed of Yankee individualism endures. It's something to be proud of."
The Hartford Courant

DINING

"The Country Squire is riddled with American History...but visitors are neither overwhelmed by its roots nor made to feel like they are sitting in history class. ..The restaurant...where checkered tablecloths beautifully offset dark beams and slanted ceilings... had an expansive tavern sense and natural flow, cozy and warm...Not only do the Polettis revere history, they respect palates...There's a dish for everyone...it's a well crafted patchwork of Yankee ingenuity and Middle Eastern cachet...Nestle into the back corner table. See for yourself."
The New Haven Advocate

PARTIES

"We walked back to the restaurant...marveling along the way...Wandering through the rooms full of furniture to dream about is an education in itself...The bill of fare is so interesting (and so reasonably priced)....We over-ordered...Wouldn't you be tempted by such varied offerings as Cuban Black Bean Soup, Baltic Smoked Herring with Tomato-Orange sauce, Romainian Fish Stew, Sauteed Red Cabbage and Carmelized Apples or Caponata? If we wanted to try such disparate items, we'd have to go to a heck of a lot of restaurants...We liked the ability to create our own meal, whether we base it on portion size, price, or country of origin...We just adored The Country Squire and envy the Polettis."

PRIVATE ROOMS

"The place goes on forever and we haven't even seen the dining room...We're beginning to feel like the royal family of Siam...we have only to say the word because the chef cooks everything to order...Although the house dates back to 1794 and the land was farmed for 100 years, The Country Squire has been a restaurant for most of its life. Closed for 10 years, it was in disrepair when the current owners, Michael and Laurel Poletti, acquired it and began putting things to rights. Now the main house had been loved back to life...The owner is an expert fixer-upper with a passion for cooking."
Connecticut Magazine

ACCOMMODATIONS

"Michael's other love has been the discovery of gourmet cooking in a very naturalistic style...From old family recipes for fresh Beef Brisket and Romanian Fish Stew, to recipes gleaned from old family friends who cooked for Newport's mansion families. The combination of items is both subtle and sublime...People are encouraged to experiment and to share...Antiques are for sale within the restaurant, as well as in the magnificient red barn behind. It's a destination en route to so many places...you owe it to yourself not to miss any opportunity to relax and enjoy this very special place and it's very special dining."
The Connecticut Antiques Guide

ANTIQUES

"A lovely meal can be had once again in this enchanting place. The back of the inn, in what was known as the woodshed -an 18th Century carriage barn on the property- its stone floors, soft lighting, and ajoining patio, create a soothing and luxurious atmosphere in which to dine... has a romantic hideaway feeling...The Trumpeter is delighted to recommend a trip to The Country Squire...to partake of the casually elegenat atmosphere and the fine European dining."
